Gabriel da Rosa’s second album on Stones Throw, Cacofonia, is out June 6th. It’s an ode to his native country of Brazil, and celebrates his family, its environment, and the country’s indigenous and working-class people. The album was written when Gabriel left Los Angeles, his home of eight years, and returned home. On his debut single “Pê Patu Pá”, Gabriel honors the fight to preserve the Brazilian national songbird, the Sabiá.

Following the release of his debut record É o que a casa oferece in 2023, Gabriel traveled to Cruz Alta, the rural farmland in Southern Brazil where he grew up. Though he’d felt like an outsider growing up, seeing Brazil with fresh eyes made him feel more connected to his people and home country than ever before. He kept these memories close when he returned to Los Angeles and began work on Cacofonia.
On Cacofonia, Gabriel pairs bossa nova with new influences: Brazilian musicians working in other genres, like Rodrigo Amarante and O Terno, and American artists such as David Byrne and Sam Evian – a reflection of how Gabriel has one foot in Brazil and the other in LA. Cacofonia’s title, which translates to “cacophony”, gestures to its clash of “notes, tensions, surprises and moods”.
Having returned to Brazil and gained a new perspective, Gabriel saw “how proud I was
of my culture. I used to be lost, scared, and trying so hard to please others.” After eight years
away from his family, Gabriel pledges to “never disconnect from my people and roots for
this long again”. Cacofonia makes good on that promise. It’s “me, in this moment of my life.”
