Eddie Chacon‘s new album Lay Low is out now. It’s a collection of eight songs produced by Nick Hakim, focused on loving and letting go. They’re his most personal to date, too – he examines the grief of losing his mother, Patricia. The album was recorded over two years in Hakim’s Brooklyn studio. The first time Eddie connected with Nick, they recorded three songs in three days. “From that point forward it seemed like we’d been working together forever,” Eddie says. “I wanted the mood to be hazy and sensual. There’s darkness, but there’s light to be found if you search for it. Nick understood this and created a musical landscape that feels awash in beauty struggling to find its way.”

On “Empire”, he reconnects with John Carroll Kirby to bridge the sound of 2023’s Sundown while hinting at what’s to come. “At first, I was rusty, apprehensive. John was my security blanket,” Eddie says. “He mined the gold in me.” While he and Kirby are still very close, “the time felt right to leave the nest.”
“End of the World” finds Eddie murning the end of a relationship that’s come to a close – – whether romantic, familial or platonic is left open for the listener to decipher. Eddie says: “I feel like there comes a time when you’ve got to find the courage within yourself to turn the page and move onto the next thing, but it’s hard to close the chapter when all you have is faith that a better fit will come along.” He adds, “There’s darkness, but there’s light to be found if you search for it. Nick understood this and created a musical landscape that feels awash in beauty struggling to find its way.”
On “Let The Devil In”, ominous and cinematic production by Nick is paired with moody, soulful vocals in a lament for the rapidly changing world we live in. “I was thinking about the speed that society is moving, with regard to diminishing attention span, lack of compassion, no longer being able to walk in someone else’s shoes or relate,” Eddie says.
“Good Sun” was inspired by Eddie’s last memory of his mother, who passed away from Alzheimer’s. “Her default setting was optimism; she was always looking for the good spot of sun. If the sun was over there, we all went over there,” Eddie says. “The song is about the sadness of losing her but the hope that she finds the good sun.
