Mocky – Music Will Explain (Choir Music Vol. 1)

Mocky‘s debut album on Stones Throw is Music Will Explain (Choir Music Vol. 1), out June 27th. In the age of AI, Mocky asks, why do we do what we do? Why do we create the things that we create? Why make music if not to make something that only human beings can experience together? When we need answers, music will explain.

With his new record, Mocky attempts to capture the essence of humanity in an increasingly digital and artificial world. Centered around the human voice, Music Will Explain is the result of Mocky’s obsessive quest to capture the “sound of humans” – it’s a deliberate mixture of vocal harmonies, live instrumentation, and analog recording, united by Mocky’s distinctive songwriting.

Mocky invited friends and collaborators from Northeast Los Angeles’ music scene to crowd around a single microphone in his garage and sing together a cappella. Inspired by the vocals found on records by the Bee Gees, the Beach Boys, Brazilian trio Mocoto, and even ‘70s Sesame Street cuts, Mocky would sit at a piano bench and record straight to an old tape recorder until he heard every voice merge into one. He’d then add drums, his main instrument, and would follow with bass, keyboards and almost every other instrument on the record.

Earlier this year, Mocky released a version of Dusty Springfield’s “Just a Little Lovin’”, shortly followed by a remix of the track by Peanut Butter Wolf ft. The Koreatown Oddity.

You can join Mocky for his album release show at Zebulon in Los Angeles on July 1st.
