We don’t have images of all João’s prints from the Stones Throw photo show, but here are a couple – both taken April 2004, the night of the Madvillain & Jaylib show in Los Angeles at the Henry Fonda Theater. It was the first night Madlib & J Dilla performed together. The DOOM picture is previously unpublished. The Jaylib shot was used for the double-CD version of Champion Sound.
We met João in 2003 when Fader Magazine sent him over to the house where we ran the label to shoot a few pictures for a feature called Nothing But The Soul. He shot Dudley Perkins for the Expressions cover, Percee P for Perseverance, and took those nightmarish pictures of Gary Wilson walking around under a bridge with a mannequin.
