On Monday November 28th 2011, a heavy-hearted edition of Funkmosphere was dedicated to the life of Jovan “J-1” Coleman. Family, fans and friends gathered to hear the funk J-1 championed and collectively mourn the loss of a member of our extended musical family.

Dam-Funk paid his respects and shared his love and admiration for J throughout the night. House Shoes played an all-vinyl set and reminded everyone that J was responsible for introducing him to the mother of his child. Peanut Butter Wolf brought boxes of Master Blazter records and offered copies to everyone in attendance. Members of the Animal Kingdom, a collective J-1 aka THE DEER founded in LA, shouted out their animal names in a somber roll call. People drank Cazadores, J-1’s favorite tequila, and put all colors of smoke in the air. Coleman (mochilla.com) brought his camera and gave those in attendance a chance to say goodbye.

Jovan Coleman was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. A self taught musician, he relocated to California in 2007 to live out his calling as a DJ, producer and drummer. J-1 quickly became an integral staple of the Los Angeles music scene, whether on the turntables, behind the kit with Master Blazter or through his numerous beat-tapes, collaborations and vinyl releases. His drive and positivity were instantly apparent. He will always be missed.

J-1 passed away in Sweden on November 27th, 2011. Donations can be sent through pay-pal to jaydrum@mugpush.com. 100% of all monies will go directly to the Coleman family.
