Is anyone bold enough to vote for their own beat in this format..?? ha ha

JINESIS - damn this is dark, I like it..!! interesting drum sounds, definitely give it some character. maybe a little unnecessarily long, but the clip in the middle and the vocal drops help that. I like it, 15 beats this week and we're off to a good start.

PS: listening to your beat from last week's battle (never listened to it because of the whole player fuck up), it's fantastic..!!

SubBass49 - first thing I notice is that the bars are a little choppy sounding, sounds better when all the instruments come in. the bass and the organ in the right ear are great and like how you flipped the vocals from the other song. drums vary and sound great throughout -- yeah man, this is definitely hot..!! I'm sure I've seen it written before, but your beats definitely come in on the longer side -- don't get me wrong, it's not necessarily a bad thing but there's a saying out there that goes 'everything you've written would be 25% better if you were forced to make it 25% shorter'...ha ha

sleepy - ha ha - don't know why but that's my initial reaction..this is sweet..!! definitely stepped out the box with this one and it completely pays off..!! yes my friend very nicely done on this one. I like the little touch at the end, though it maybe wants me to hear more variations like this throughout, but at the same time by not doing so you didn't clutter it up, plus gives it some payoff at the end..though the ending is a bit abrupt. yeah man, great job I really enjoyed it..!!

Darren 1980 - this is pretty cool. the timing on the bass seems to be a little off to me, the scratching sound is cool but maybe a little overused..?? liked the drop out, that was very nicely done the build up again is pretty cool but again pretty long..not too sure how I feel about the organ part over the beat it just sounds off key and distracts me from everything. sorry, hope this doesn't read too negative..

cralias - off on another cralias ride, ha ha..!! I maybe sometimes find your stuff to be pretty crazy, this one though is not as crazy as some as your other stuff and I think it makes it a little less effective. certainly less quirky than some of your other beats, I miss the complete change up halfway through - ha ha..!! still it's cool seeing a little variety -- though like a J-Zone beat, you definitely know who made it..!!

ren - classy - haha..!! well I have to say the beat definitely compliments the dialogue. the whole thing sounds screwy -- it's a nice little half minute mind-fuck, I like it..!!

straight outta fremont - BOO to the megaupload..!! (though I won't hold it against your beat)

theyoungelohim9 - ha ha starts off sounding like something from Zelda..!! nice chops on the vibes, some are a little sloppy but overall the flow of the pattern is nice -- I like when the full drums come in..the song definitely progresses nicely. nice little surgical strike, comes in and out pretty quickly. good work..

straight outta fremont -- still downloading...

Milkman - I like the different take on this one, the off time drums sound cool with the samples -- though the actual drum sounds aren't my favorite. still all in all this is a very classy beat -- nice structure, nice feel, nice little touches throughout -- I think I want a frosty drink with an umbrella in it now..

straight outta fremont -- hmmm..well I didn't type along as I listened as I do most of the time, it definitely was pretty interesting. I think you were outside the triangle that's outside the circle that's outside the box with this one..!! to be quite honest I don't know if I heard any of either sample, maybe slightly in the background I heard Wig's but wasn't really sure. though it seems to me that you put some work into this and I have only complete respect for that. not sure if I really got it though -- though I have to admit what you started building at about the 3:20 mark was quite insane..!! definite highlight of the beat. mostly I wish I heard more of either sample source in it -- because if this was made up entirely out of those two songs then hands-down this is the beat of the week..!! ha ha

oma1 - I like the vibe chops and the swing and pattern of the drums, but the bass note that drops definitely sounds off to me and I would have upped the volume on the vibes -- I certainly like this beat -it's definitely a nice loop and I like the vocal drops you have throughout -- it just has a couple short comings in my opinion -- sorry..

PS: to the zSHARE users: I had buffering problems today, trust me I heard them all front to back uninterrupted. just giving the heads up...

TKurata - damn, this just sounds so freakin' loud and clear, I love it..!! sounds to me like you used mostly, if not all from your sample. I really liked how you flipped it, the backwards vox into the forward vox was a nice touch..!! again, everything sounds so nice and loud, can't stress that enough -- drums sound great too. I liked it -- very good..!!

The Wig Master - I love the bassline..!! I like the effects you put on the vibes, gives them an nice eerie sound. I like the guitar, was that from the other sample or outside source..?? a little repetitive maybe, but still was very cool -- I liked this one.

Outlier - sounds like you used TKurata's sample this week -- I like this one -- it sounds like something El-P would score to a spy movie..!! maybe you're a little too liberal with crossover volumes..?? that would be my main/only complaint (if I am allowed to complain)

funkyfunky* - again another interesting beat -- but overall misses the mark with me. the drums are just too over the place, the bass sounds off key to me and that random drop doesn't really add anything to the main loop..sorry once again if this reads negative...

well those are my initial thoughts -- I know who's in the running -- gonna listen again and make my final decision..

I really liked Sub's and Sleepy's as well, but felt both should have been shorter...

i'm disappointed i didn't have time to submit a beat this week... i liked the samples. anyway, i'm definitely in for next week. until then, here's a review of each beat as i listen.

JINESIS - nice and dark, but it gets to be a little repetitive and sounds like it's just plodding along... until the vibes come in at the end, that was a nice chop. i would have liked to hear more of that, because otherwise most of the sounds are in the low, muddy frequencies, and my ear wants to hear a little more sparkle, heh.

SubBass49 - reeeally really nice progression in your sample loops with the vibes/bass. there's some sloppiness in the kick or something, like there are two kicks really close together in a lot of spots, which is throwing me off. i like the organ sound. your organ part doesn't match the last chord in that looped vibes sample, though, and it would have made a big difference if you had caught that chord change in your organ part. overall there's a really cool vibe to the beat.

sleepy - this is just beautiful. i love how different parts gently fade in and fade out. there's a lot of repetition, but it's so tastefully done, and the sounds are so nicely layered... it reminds me of steve reich. the guitar that comes in around 2:20 is my favorite part. if there's one thing i'd change about this... i know this is a hip hip forum, but i would almost rather hear this same piece with some crazy intricate squarepusher type drums... oh, also, it ends too abruptly, which i wasn't expecting given how nicely the rest of the beat is arranged. unless that's just the myspace player bugging out.

Darren 1980 - in the beginning i was thinking, okay, a low pass filter, boring. and then whoa, this crazy squelchy sound, i like it. very cool, but it's dragging on a bit... looking for variety... there's a gap in between each repetition of the loop that becomes noticeable with so many repetitions. ah, and the low pass filter returns.... and now... a new loop. also with a gap between repetitions. i think the myspace player is glitching, it just skipped to the next song before this one was done. oh well, i heard enough to get an idea. good loops, very cool effect on the first part, but the beat could use a little more variety.

cralias - nice scratching. i want more punch in the kick. when the scratching stops, it exposes the end points of your chops and the silence in between, making it sound, well, choppy. i don't know how to get around that... a little subtle reverb? i don't know what you're using, but can you control the decay time on your samples?

ren - the beat is actually pretty nice if you look past the electro drums (especially that hi hat) and the distracting porn sample. but with the short length and the distracting sample, it's hard to take this one seriously, no offense.

t!llman - your beats are getting better every time, man. some of the drum sounds are a little cheesy, but the whole thing is really nicely arranged, great use of the samples... you held my interest through the whole beat. i'm pretty sure by now that the myspace player is clipping off the end of songs, so i'll stop complaining about abrupt endings.

straight outta fremont - maybe next time use myspace or at least zshare? okay, done downloading. interesting with the beat boxing... now here are some melodic samples from another source, hmm. well, there are good parts, but the whole thing is sort of lacking a flow. it starts to sound just like somebody playing around with a sampler, rather than a cohesive beat.

theyoungelohim9 - nice chopping. the groove in the bass really moves this forward. i like it.

Milkman - this is cool, i like the irregular form with the extra beat, that's a really nice musical touch. good drum patterns... but i think the snare is a little too hot in the mix.

oma1 - yeah, nice hip hop feel, a lot of the other beats have been leaning in other directions, which is fine, but it's nice to here somebody bring it back. nothing fancy here, but it's enough to make my head nod.

TKurata - i've liked all of your beats so far, and this one is no exception. real heavy drums that sound like they're in the other room... heavy groove. great chopping. the yo la tengo vocal break sounds cool reversed. nice job.

The Wig Master - this bass is filthy. as expected, great spacey chops and wiggy drums. the wig master, always a contender.

Outlier - nice chopping with the yo la tengo drum/guitar bit in the background. i'm not digging the huge sweeping saw over it all, though.

funkyfunky* - this is good, props for not quantizing your drums... but there's a way to do out of time drums that sounds really funky, and it seems like this isn't quite it, i dunno. otherwise, a really nice vibe to the beat.

JINESIS - I love the intro...very dark. Immediate head nod kickin. Vox drops are pretty cool...those YLT chops sound pretty good in there pitched down like that. i really like the mood of the beat, but I could have used a sprinkling of melody in there...oh wait there it is...like it better without..lol...right at the end. something more ominous lurking in there would have alot for me. tight beat though, sounds dope as hell on my system. I really liked the main loop throughout, great texture! hope to see you back.

Subbass - Not really feeling the naked chops...when the beat drops they sound good. I like the way you chopped these loops. I guess you dropped quantizing on your drums, the kicks sound a little too wobbly for me. If they weren't those signature subbass kicks (loud) then it might have worked better for me...something more subtle for this beat maybe. I would have abandoned kick rolls altogether for this beat, too. The flipped FLT vox sound really dope. This beat really comes together around 2:20 or 2:40, although the synths start to sound cheesy in there, I didn't like the organ sound too much. There are a some great moments in here, and I like the direction you took. Cool beat. rooftoptopmakesmesunroof indeed! Yeah here at the end everything sounds dope cept maybe the organ.

sleepy - yeah...sleepy alright. livin up to your moniker. sounds really cool. past the 1:04 mark here the chops are really blending nicely...the drums sound a little weak...probably what you were going for though. at the 1:45 mark everything is coming together nicely. I like how you went so long without drums and it stil sounded good and hypnotic like remus said. I guess maybe some variation would be welcome at the 2:30 mark here...no drums again...I like it. would be great for an album closer...nice work man!!!

Darren 1980 - I'm glad someone looped the YLT ish...intro was ok...when the drums drop it sounds pretty dope. Did you use any out side sources? SOunds like the burbly thing is maybe the YLT loop drenched in fx? The change probably came too late...1:37 mark, I guess you are just changing direction completely here. THe shaker thing sounds a little high in the mix. I think you should throw a different loop in every fourth or so. Oooh I like when you layer both loops here...would have liked a breakdown or something in between there. Cool stuff but the repetition hurts it. good work though man, hope to hear more form ya.

cralias - sounds good...not really catchin a groove though so far. sounds like some levels are off or somethin. the scracthin is distracting me a bit. the melody really has no swing to it, kind of throws this one off for me. It's well constructed and all but the sampled melody sounds like a poorly played synth or something. I always appreciate your take on stuff, though. Yeah I'm still typing and the beat is over, would have like to have heard more.

ren - oh damn my neighbors gonna think I'm a porno freak! lol...yeah it's good to have you in the battles and the beat sounds pretty cool...but just feels like a little interlude, like a preset beat with some sampled loops kinda throw on there. I still like it...fun stuff.

T!llman - oh yeah you lit up my stereo! nice and heavy...I like that roll in there sounds good. All the shakers/claps/hats sound a little peppy on top of these samples, though, would be a complaint I'm having. Nice a really nice flow...the YLT vox chops sound good...I would say maybe the kicks are lacking character? I would like to hear another loop in there in the first section every 4th or something...nice mixdown, this some good stuff...I can't say much for intros or outtros lately, but this beat just stops abrubtly. I like the beat alot though...nice sound you have.

straight outta fremont - waiting...waiting...14 seconds...ok. downloading. ok. here we go. The levels are all over the place. What is your gameplan here? IT's all over the place. I appreciate the originality but I'm not reallyy sure what's going on. There are some snares that are REALLY high in the mix. Around the 1:07 mark you lock into some sorta house groove thang...and what the heck is that female vox thing? That wasn't in the samples, was it? Um...ok...the sample chops I guess are the synth sounding stabs bouncing seemingly randomly everywhere? OK man I gotta cut ya off this is really long and in serious need of some editing.

theyoungelohim9 - nice to have you back...I gotta say the chord progresh in the beginning is just too random and didn't work for me. You are just cycling thourgh different loops here. I would have like to have seen you toss out some of these loops, keep the good ones, and just kind of lay it out better or something. There are some great moments in there but just when I'm getting into it it swtiches to something not so great, and then back to dope...and then it's over. There is a great beat in here, just needs more work maybe.

Milkman - ok starts off really mellow with those naked samples...drums hitting pretty nice and hard. those little rolls are ok, one of them seems stuck in my right channel, though. pan somma that maybe. The chops flow along with the drums pretty damn nicely. NOt hearing much in the way of low end bass here. Also that hat thing sounds like a metronome. cool beat, sounded pretty good on my stereo.

oma1 - i'm boycottingg turning my stereo up...cuz I wanna see how good cats can mix down. unfortunately this means your beat is pretty low volume right now. Sounds a lot like other beats cause of those vibes from Wigs sample. The vox drop sound pretty good. Nice little lurch to it. Good sound overall.

The Wigmaster - aw yeah...nice sounds here. I was a little put off by the sample used cuz I've been hearing so much of that so far. That bassline is DOPE though. Nice and thick. Sounds like Ira whispering in my right channel every bar...creepy. I like the direction you took but was surprised that is kinda sounded kinda repetitive! I wonder what this would sound like with more cracking drums. Anyway good work man...

Outlier - Some electro fx to start it out...really textured ish...like the feel of it, but are the drums ever gonna change or get louder? Hmmm...guess not. What is that droney thing? Outside source? Gotta listen again cuz it's short. Sounds like some knob turning good times. I guess I would have liked to have heard heavier drums, but that is just a personal pref. Definetely an original direction here.

funkyfunky* - ok this sounds different, too. Sounded like a heavy kick in there but it was just my neighbors upstairs...lol. Really light sounding beat, the chops are pretty good but don't match the drums too well imo. Gotta restart the beat it's over already. That main loop is nice and chill...the drums actually sound better this time, really loose. You could have layered a bit more stuff on there, sounds just a little too sparse mebbe.

Ok sorry for all the negativity...some good sounds this week. I really enjoyed JINESIS beat the most, it was smooth, dark, and sounded dope on my system. Runners up would be Wig Master, sleppy, T!llman, and Subbass (2:20 mark to end, lol)

Thanks for the votes and feedback, peace.

Thanks alot man and thanks for the vote. I have really been working on my mixdowns lately...yeah everything is from the samples except some outside kicks.

TKurata - i've liked all of your beats so far, and this one is no exception. real heavy drums that sound like they're in the other room... heavy groove. great chopping. the yo la tengo vocal break sounds cool reversed. nice job.

Danke. Disappointed that you didn't enter this week! Glad to see that you took the time to give feedback, again, much respect. Yeah the drums were kinda meant to sound like that, I had a snare that was much more crackin but this seemed to fit the beat much better. The reversed YLT break was me just messing around and then I grew attached to how it sounded and couldn't let it go!

For me it was close between Tillman and Tkurata.. I think TKURATA edged it with the drums

THANKS MAN!

peace.

Reviews:

JINESIS - like the intro...nice & heavy track...sounds like something Lo-Deck might flow on...nice samples...might make a nice interlude...cool track...

sleepy - hmmm...cool transition into the main beat...subtle but nice...very mellow vibe...diggin it...good chillin' track...weekend morning type shit...not sure about the extended breakdown, but I guess it works for the style of beat...I really dig the style of your work...has a real slick vibe...I could imagine you gettin' someone to play over the top of this with a jazz guitar solo or a sax...if you know anyone who'd do it, it would make a really nice track...like the subtle background stuff you're doing in there...barely audible but it works well. EXCELLENT track.

Darren 1980 - bassy...like the squishy stuff in the left channel...headphones are good for this track...a little too repetetive...too long with no changes I think...good for a dance track though...just crazy when you dropped it back through with the transition...I see you do house tracks too, and I feel some of that influence in this track..though this end part seems a bit "off" for some reason...not sure what it is though...

cralias - not too sure about the repetetive 3-note chop...getting tiring already...maybe for use as an interlude but at full track length it's just too much of the same repeated main sounds...

ren - nice picture for the track!...lol...woah...holy shit...good thing I've got the headphones on...my wife is on the couch watching TV...lol...the beat is trippy sounding...that steady thump...pretty short track but it was kinda cool...

t!llman - faster stuff here than most of the others...not sure about the little drum-roll transition...doesnt seem to fit right with the tempo...the first change is dope though...that quick little open break...really choppy stuff though in some of the transitions...it kinda throws me off...and the munchkin "gangsta lean" is a trip!

straight outta fremont - Cool beatbox stuff added in...feel like the track loses momentum sometimes...maybe it was on purpose...not sure...not really big on the change up...feel like it needs more of a direction...the acapella doesn't really seem to fit the vibe to me...hmmm...maybe if I dropped some acid it'd make more sense...lol...

theyoungelohim9 - like when your drums kick in...but the kick drum sounds really electro for such an organic track...I respect what you did with a part of the sample track that I honestly couldn't stand...

Milkman - interesting sample use...I like tha tapping in the left channel...the breaks are dope too...crazy use of that snare too...I'm diggin this track...

oma1 - nice start...like your snare/clap sound...chops are decent...some hats might help keep things moving when ya break it down...over-use of the chopped acapellas kind of kill their impact (something I learned doing justa bout the same thing you did)...overall not bad though.

TKurata - WOAH! Nice start...HEAVY track...I really dig this one...industrial heavy but with some nice delicate parts too...the reversed waveform vox are trippin'...nice stuff...this track is fluid as hell...everything is flowin...right up until the breakdown...

The Wig Master - Your basslines always make me jealous...lol...such a fat tone...you should give lessons..lol...this is dope...kind of rambling but pretty bad-ass...

Outlier - cool intro...fuckin nasty synth work...in a good way...damn...drums are still a bit lo-fi for my tastes...kept expecting some full-strength drums to drop in...

funkyfunky* - like the chops you used...cool drum patterns...think the hats are a bit too high in the mix...short but cool.

Overall, I'm feelin Sleepy, Milkman, and TKurata the most...

By the way...Good lookin' out on the feedback ya'll...

I'm gonna take it to heart on this week's battle...

Hopefully there will be some sample choices I like more this week (no offense to last week's winners...but I really wasnt feeling those choices)...

(and no it's not because you bitched about me never voting for you last week...lol)

That's hilarious...yeah I didn't think you would vote for me after last week...lol. thanks man.

Sorry--my sample choices have been kinda self-indulgent...i'll approach it with more of a producer's ear this time around.

thanks for the feedback everyone, especially to SubBass who had me in his top 3. I'll most likely be entering again next week.

Behind Wig Master, Sleepy had my next favorite beat.

thanks for the votes. sorry if you weren't feeling the sample (i wasn't really either).

beat was a little repetitive. gonna change it up with some more melody action...

t!ll- the guitar was garageband

sub- ditto with the basslines. sometimes i'll layer two bass sounds together but almost always the basic compressor

Wow...because your basslines always have a real "feel" to 'em...not sure how to describe it other than that...always dope.
