first of all, i have to apologize, as i don't own any vinyl, and most of my soul and funk collection is in m4a or wma, and i didn't feel like transcoding to mp3. what i settled on may lack the cachet of a raw, rare treasure, but hey: i was in the audience when it was recorded!

this week's sample is Pop Tune #1 from (gasp) a 2007 live release by one Chris Potter, yet another white man co-opting black music. but he's really fucking good. like, really good. this sample might be outside the realm of what you all usually work with, but from what i heard this week, there's something here for everybody.

the tune starts out slow, with lots of sustained notes, perfect for chopping and filtering. you probably won't find any hot loops in this first part, though... but then we get past the guitar solo (adam rogers getting his rock thing on) and past the refrain, and then things open up. you get a little bit of open sax, if you want to play around with that... and then there's just a bit of open drums (nate smith), and then this ish just gets funky. there are loops here if you want em. some funky rhodes (craig taborn) is available with filtering... yeah. nice.

if you like this music, please support these working musicians and buy the album. there are other sample-worthy songs with open drums, there's a good deal of gorgeous open rhodes, and the band just kills it on every tune.

i can't wait to see what you all do with it. unfortunately, i'm gonna have to sit out on this week's battle, as i have something else that will be taking up all my time this week, but i'll be there to hear what you all post on friday.

EDIT: new sample track for the unadventurous... O'Jays - Who Am I

to review the rules:
-use either or both of these samples and no other melodic samples.
-use whatever drums you want.
-add synth if you want, but the sample is the focus of the beat.
-post your beat in this thread before midnight next friday.
-peace

Mate you seem a little obsessed about the fact that you're white and you do black music. There's loads of white dudes in here making beats, and by the sounds of it, you've been making black music for longer then most of us have.

No offence though.

no offence, and I dont take part in these so my opinion dunt really matter but it's fuckin horrible! cheesy white man jazz.... uuurrrggghhh, vomit dribbling down the side of my mouth as I type.... really talented musicians but theres no excuse, maybe in the 70s but not nowadays.

anyway, apologies if this upsets anyone in anyway but I had to say it

scanning the song now -- seems like there's some stuff in here, and despite it being live it definitely sounds loud and clear...

on a complete non-beat making side, this guitar solo is making my heart ache, it's simply stunningly beautiful..!!

the sample is pretty cheesy to be honest, but you know, a challenge is good.

sorry no entry this week by the way, been way to busy finishing off spacebound stuff and a new beat tape.

so guys calm down with all the trash talking yeesh......... and there is some good white jazz from all the times old and new, but i would think that now a days we would be able to get past this color issue, especially on a message board for freakin' stones throw, come on, and no one thinks medeski martin and wood are any good? come on..........and this whole thing reminds me of Sage Francis "Mullet" "...it's a black art manepulated by a white controller, just like Rock and Roll was..." just a little brain candy....

on this matter, there really is no such thing as "white jazz" these days... certainly in the past, there have been clear differences along racial lines -- the distinctly white, so-called sweet bands of the swing era, for instance, or the third stream movement (being chiefly white) versus hard bop (back to black church roots) in the late 50s and 60s -- but i would argue that now more than ever, it's simply a matter of the artist's approach to the music and how he chooses to interpret the tradition. there are plenty of cats who are reaching beyond post-bop and incorporating elements of modern popular music... i can't tell you how many jazz musicians, black and white, have covered radiohead songs. and then there are plenty of traditionalists who would prefer to carry on an insular jazz tradition. do these camps break along racial lines? no, not at all. it's all just music... this group has two black guys and two white guys, and they're cutting edge. you may think this song is cheesy (indeed, it is self-consciously titled Pop Tune #1), but if you bother to check out the rest of their stuff, you'll see what i mean.

I guess I'll be using the unadventurous sample this week. Getting the stitches out of my hand so now maybe I'll actually feel like making a beat. Damn school is starting though.

yes, it did upset me. but your apologies are accepted. :) you're absolutely entitled to think this is cheesy (and i see where you're coming from), but i'm gonna go out on a limb and guess that you're not all that familiar with jazz if you think this belongs in the 70s.
