so i was wandering around myspace today and discovered that nate smith (the funky drummer on this week's sample, pop tune #1) is also a producer on the side. who knew? check out his tracks and the video "monday morning" as well, it's an R&B thing in 6/4, which you don't hear that often. as you might expect, his tracks have nice drums.

Well...it's midnight on the East coast...I just had a chance to start messin with the samples today...and I wasnt really feelin' anything that I wrote...

So here is the lesser of all the evils I created...

Spent all of 4 hours working on a variety of stuff I didn't even like...

Couldn't write changes for shit...

Couldn't come up with creative ideas for shit...

So I took whatever I had when I reached my frustration point, layered in a recording from a local police scanner to keep it interesting...and called it a week.

Fugg it.

Expecting ZERO votes this week...but it's all good. There's always next week!

"Stuck in an Elevator"

Enjoy. Or be Bored. Either way. :(

I don't have anything for this week. I had all my samples chopped up but couldn't really put anything I liked together, so I just deleted all the chops.

I actually had a lot of fun with this week's sample. ended up turning it into a big funk workout, and i'm proud enough of it to upload it.

not great but whatever you know

maybe not as a stand-alone track, but this would be amazing as an outtro or interlude, that part before the saxophone. really nice.

when in doubt, always overlay the police scanner. "uh, we'll come up with a plan once we get there... if they're still in the elevator."

Haha...you found my favorite part of the scan...lol...

BTW...if you guys are ever bored and will be off your computer for a while, there's all kinds of online police scanners that you can monitor...run a loop from the audio out to the mic input and you can record them through audacity or goldwave or whatever...sort back through 'em later. Friday and Saturday nights from about 11:30pm-2:30am can be pretty interesting. They make good samples to layer with your stuff...plus every now & then you hear some funny shit...

No disrespect taken. I'll try some more smooth tracks every now & then. It's funny..because that used to be all I made and I challenged myself to break away from it a bit...but it looks like I've been balancing too far over on the rough side of beats lately. Feedback like this is cool because that's something I hadnt really noticed about my stuff. Also funny that this is the beat I had the least time to work on, and that was the most frustrating to me. If I hadn't been able to come up with that piano part I probably wouldn't have posted a beat this week at all.

Anyway...I plan on checking all the beats tonight or tomorrow and posting my critiques...

it is what it is -- I didn't want to NOT submit a beat this week but at the same time I didn't want to submit a beat this weak..

Johnny 5's Revenge

I really think I need to stop listening to that UGK album for a while...

PS: not that it really matters -- but I did get this in under the deadline, despite what the time says -- I guess I didn't set that up right because it's 5 to midnight right now in NY, I swear it..!!

Man I hate myspace...should be working now. I don't like to post beats without the car test...so beware of a bad mix.

couldn't tell you -- was a surprise to me as well. I was listening to the beats earlier and was wondering where the "Pop Tune" sample was in them -- then it finally all came together...
