Tally for STMB Beat Battle #38:

TKurata - 4
The Wig Master - 3
soleil - 2
quasquasquas - 2
AerosolBreath - 1
DeezSteez - 1
Josh G - 1
SubBass49 - 1

Thanks to everyone who voted for me and to those who submitted tracks and/or feedback. I was not expecting this at all, the competition was tough last week! For this week, I am going to mix it up and upload a total of 4 slices to sample from:

Ahmad Jamal Trio - Something to Remember You By - http://www.mediafire.com/?7xzx11ewzi9
Los Indios - El Huma Huaqueno - http://www.mediafire.com/?7ymuyvyu9zv
Paul Simon - Peace Like a River - http://www.mediafire.com/?6vfdt1mjlzd
Sylvia - My Thing - http://www.mediafire.com/?7zdwyu0twpd
STMB #39 Song Pack ZIP - http://www.mediafire.com/?4oihoznbyjd

Let me know if you want to host again this week, jayred.

RULES:

1. You can sample as many or as few of the sample songs as you want, no restrictions.
2. Limited synths, vocals, scratches are ok.
3. Drums wide open.
4. Submit your beat starting Thursday evening through Friday 1200 Midnight EST
5. Voting begins Saturday morning through Saturday 1200 Midnight EST
6. Competition wide open for newcomers.

NOTE: There are several producers on this board that I highly respect who prefer one sample a week for the battle. I promise if I ever win again, (unlikely), that I will post just one sample. Since I started in these battles 6 or 7 weeks ago I have not had much time to work on a track that is not a STMB track. I have barely enough time to finish one cut per week. I really enjoy working with a broad range of samples per cut, and would love to see what you talented cats can do with these samples. I hope those of you that are opposed to multiple samples will accept the challenge this week and submit their usual quality cuts.

Let's keep these battles bangin! The last few battles have been really inspiring, there is not a weak producer in the bunch. Get looping n cutting ya'll, peace,
-TKurata

Good deal TKurata...I know some heads will be opposed to this, but I'm down to give it a try on a limited basis. I think as long as it's not necessarily a permanent thing, we should all give it a shot and see what happens.

Good luck ya'll!!

PS - Thanks for startin up the thread TK...I wasn't sure if I'd be awake too early...

Definitely not a permanent thing. I know I'll be busy again this week and won't have time to work on more than one cut, and I'd really like to use all four of these tracks. Again, I hope that those opposed will keep an open mind and give it a try. Last week's sample had about 5 or 6 little open breaks...that's it. It was still cool and the results were good, but I want to see what the talented STMB roster can come up with using these dozens of breaks. Both are interesting ways to compete. Please please please don't boycott...there are some guys that haven't posted in a while...turnout has been STELLAR though, keep it up!

Yeah no prob Sub, you should go back to bed...nurse that hangover or start kicking people out of the pad...

What up, folks. I know I'm a little late to this, but I'd like to give this a shot. I'll try to have a beat submitted by late thursday/early friday.

My question is: how doi I submit beats?

I saw in the previous beat battle that all the entires were posted on individual MySpace pages. Since I have a MySpace music page myself, should I just post my submission up on my page and notify you guys?

Sorry, I'm a noob to this message board.

No worries.

Just post your track to your Myspace page some time Friday, then post a link to it here. We'll all visit your page and check out what ya came up with...some will hit ya with feedback...then on Saturday we vote. Winner chooses the next sample and the whole thing starts again on Sunday.

If ya have any more questions though, feel free to ask.

PS - Good to have ya on board!

I'm not knocking the multiple sample thing but...too many samples for me.

I'm curious to see if someone uses all of them without sounding like clutter.

I'm focusing in on one of 'em for a more cohesive sound...I know TK's style is very glitchy and hectic though...I expect his beat will be ace this time around...

Aw, come on man, give it a go! You can use only one sample if you want! Is there at least one sample song here that inspires you?

Thanks for the vote of confidence JB...glad to hear you are in this battle! Can I ask which track you are focusing on?

yeah me too... actually, that was the whole challenge i set forth for myself, to see if i could use at least some little bit from each of the songs and come up with something cohesive. and i actually came up with a gameplan.

UNFORTUNATELY (dot dot dot) this has been a busy week for me too so i've only just barely begun, i'm really kinda doubting that i'll have something polished for friday... maybe something really rough... but even if i don't finish on time for the battle i'm still gonna go through with it for the personal challenge...

The Ahmad Jamal track...doing more heavy chopping than I usually do...usually I use short melodic loops & such...but that track had so many nice one-offs to chop I couldn't help getting a little more original with it.

Nice! Sounds cool man, can't wait to hear it. Do you think it's possible to extract a good sounding bassline from that Ahmad Jamal track? There is some open bass work but I don't know how good it'll work. Yeah I haven't started mine yet, I'll knock it out tomorrow...

Haven't really tried...I'm doing something specific and having a slightly distorted bass and drums on the track...going for a more futuristic track with a hint of maxed-out lo-fi...yet still holding on to basic hip-hop. Kinda hard to explain. I want it to sound like you're listening to it on a slightly torn speaker cone...

Thanks for the help and welcoming, SubBass49.

I'm only using one sample out of the bunch and its that Sylvia Brown song. My name kinda implies my style, which is mega chop-heavy most of the time and I usually chop the hell out of a single sample song. I'm about halfway through my submission beat. Can't wait to hear everyone else's beats! Peace

Nice work LoHim9! Did you sample that bass offa that Ahmad Jamal song? I liked it!

jahblah - a little more polish would have been nice, but I still enjoyed listening to the track.
