OK people...looks like I got it by one vote this week.

Props to Bill Collector for doin' his thing. But this week let's try to get more of a turnout. We can blame last week's low turnout on the board being down the previous week, and the sample being a bit non-traditional.

I'll try to post up something this time that's a little more in line with what you guys are used to as far as sample material...

But as for getting more people in on this, let's advertise...through myspace comments, hitting up other boards, or whatever else we can think of. Maybe hit up futureproducers.com and see if we can draw a few cats over...

Here's a code to embed the banner ad I made a while back:

<a href="http://www.stonesthrow.com/messageboard/index.php?showforum=9"><img src="http://img523.imageshack.us/img523/3302/stmbcopyei1.jpg" border="0" alt="Click to visit The Crates.." /></a>

Just copy & paste that into your myspace page...into someone's comments...or whatever.

So yeah...I'll have that sample choice posted up soon...any preferences as to which file host to put it on? I know mediafire gave people problems last time...

OK...

Trying out a new file hosting site this time...lemme know how well it works...

Track 1: Miklos Rosza - Prelude
Some real epic-sounding shit...should be fun for people to work with...from the Ben Hur/El Cid/King of Kings soundtrack record...

Track 2: Herb Ohta - Feelings
From the Nadia's Theme record (Young & The Restless Soundtrack)

EDIT: These links were all phucked...scroll down for ZShare links...

Got a bit of a soundtrack theme going on this week...enjoy 'em...

This week's rules:

- Use one track or both tracks...your choice...

- Use any bass or drums you want...limited synth is OK...

- Run any filters or compression on the samples you want...

- Limited vocal stuff such as samples and scratches/cuts is OK...

- Tracks are due Friday...

- Voting on Saturday...

edit:: whats the policy on using a vocal sample?
like a monologue from a movie?

also, you might wanna consider uploading these samples on this site.
i use it all the time and its really easy to get the .mp3 downloaded.

Vocal samples are fine...movie quotes...old dialogue records...instructional vinyl...whatever.

Even short samples from acapellas...

Just don't make the whole track have vocals I guess...it distracts from the production of the beat.

Oh...and maybe I'll try that file host if people have trouble with Zshare...thanks for the heads-up!

Nice to see some new heads in the battles! But I sure hope we'll get to see some more old ones this week too, Ern, Bill, Josh, Wig Master, ren, S.L., Honeybee, 00Genesis, and so on, and so on!

I'm starting a new job tomorrow, and have some serious issues with my living situation, but the samples sound fucking awesome so I'd still say I'm likely to do something!

Not that I have a say anymore since my absence with the baby situation and all but I really, really wish we could go back to only one sample.

EDIT: The added bonus of two samples is it gives ya a choice of what you work with...especially nice if you're not feeling one or the other...

I was gonna suggest something similar, only use samples provided. Like provide one track that has drums or just supply a straight break loop and then another track to sample for everything else. I think it makes the competition greater and more creative when you have to use what is supplied, i.e. no adding outside drums/samples, just filter and flip whats provided. Anyone down for somethin like that in the future?

I could host the samples on my site, which would probably make things a little easier. I would just have to set up an uploading page.

Possibly...

Though I've done a battle like that somewhere (forget the site right now) and it really limited the creativity of the people participating. The drums didn't sound right for the sample choice at all, and without synth (even for basslines) most of the tracks took advantage of the same short bass sample in the original track (and therefore most of the beats sounded very similar).

Overall it was pretty boring and uninspiring for me. I dont think I ever checked back in to the site to see who won.

gotta cosign with sub on this one; it seems as if it would make the beat battles themselves less exciting.

in my opinion, aside from the arrangement of the melody, the finding/chopping of the drums is the best part.

glad to see more interest this week! i am also done with my entry...

I think each idea has pros and cons, which I why it only seems fair for the winner to make the rules. if the winner wants to post four tracks and require a slice from each one he should be able to...;) you have to fight to the top to make the rules.

i can see where it would be limiting to limit EVERYTHING to the samples...it's almost impossible to pull basslines off of most tracks...you need something to pull it together. again I think the winner should choose...at the risk of alienating beat makers i think that adds to the challenge. don't really see why submitting two samples is such a concern for some, just use one of them if ya want. I think trying to match different songs in a melody or layer is very exciting, challenging and difficult... dunno, hope to see everyone throw down something.

aiiight.

Edru -

No worries...we're an understanding bunch if there's something that's gonna keep you from posting your beat on Friday. But typically we wait until then to post 'em. Gives everyone the same advantage (or lack of one). Personally I think it's a disadvantage to post the beat early, because people can listen to it for ideas, or go out trying to top it.

Hope that helps.

I guess bottom line is if you cant post it Friday, post it sooner. Better that than not posting it at all.

Fingers crossed.
