they sound like some mental tribal drums. i like it a lot. obvioulsy to me, any beat without a massive breakbeat in is rubbish!! but this'll do for now...

Sonic -- your one is mad!!! i like it a lot,, tottaly changed the song. good work

Subbass- nice chop -- i was trying to do somethign simialr but couldnt get it to stop sounding like utter shit!! the drums could be a bit grittier -- but thats just my preference...

Thanks for the feedback...the last two battles I think i lost out on votes because I used the easy loops...so I went choppier on this one to try to earn some respect. The snare samples are my special blend of Dilla snares & my own slices...the kicks are a little too clean though I hafta say. I have a hard time finding kicks I like that have a low enough punch but also have some grit...

I didn't slice 'em out myself actually...I found a cat on Soulseek that had several kits he had sampled & sliced from various records, and he had a Dilla kit in there. The kicks were pretty weak sounding, but some of the snares were tight. I like to blend 'em in with some of my own slices to create an original sound.

I rarely have the time on my hands to go through and sample one-hits from records anymore. Although I did go through the entire Balance & Options album by Dj Quick once...so I have a little DJ Quick kit saved. I may go through some Dilla & Madlib some day soon...

some people are just off limits to sample, even in your own bedroom. dilla is probably at the top of that list.

See, I rarely break them out. I think out of 60+ beats I've done since the start of last summer (when I DL-ed the kit) I've used them on 2 beats. One was a fuck-around beat where I trie dto write exclusively with the Dilla Kit for inspiration (didnt work all that well btw), and the other is this one, though it's layered with 2 other snares that I sampled on my own. As for building up kits, I have a few that I've done besides the Dj Quick kit, but they're minimal (Greek garage bands, turkish 60s music, soul tracks from the 60s, etc) with MAYBE one or two snares and some hats. I've said before that I'm just getting started in this game...still building my arsenal. And I don't consider it soft for a beginner to use samples that someone else dug anyway...you gotta start somewhere right?

Peace.

Andt88: Diggin' the break on yours...very Chrome Children-ish...sounds like some shit I'd sit around and chill or space out to...

Doot: Same goes for yours...really abstracted but I like the chops...diggin the pattern of the strings that you managed to work out...nice stuff! And the little bridge-sounding part was dope too!

Bill: As I'm listening to yours, the first few seconds had me hooked! Dope again! So far my favorite!!

Jazzur: Had me thinkin of some mellower Aphex Twin...some off-beat chops...I'm guessing you did 'em on purpose though...because they still sounded pretty sick...

That's all for now...will try to find time to comment if more are added...

yeah i guess i'd have to go with bill's. this was a tough one. i started to mess with it a few days ago but forgot to finish it.
i think you can sample hip-hop drums if you change them so they're not recognizable. it's still better practice to do it from scratch though

Yo! You lived in Hell Cajon during some of the roughest years! Shit...I wouldn't venture down this way back then. A lot of it is still rough, but the city is re-developing...startin to turn around. Back in your days though it was the methamphetamine capital of the world...literally. Yikes!

i know all to well... i moved to live with my dad because my mom was lost in meth hell. i witnessed first hand at age 13 how crippling that drug is... it's just so sickening, i fuckin hate what it did to my family. she was lost until I told her she was going to be a grandma in 1995. she has since completely rid herself of drugs and smoking and now works as an admin assistant at a boy's reform school. she still lives in SD, out in Campo. i visit when i can. late.
