Sup. Was wondering if anyone could share some recommendations for chilled jazz records? Type of stuff I can play whenever that doesn't require to much of my attention but still has heaps of depth, like a different kind of blue by Miles Davis or Time Out by Dave Brubeck. Pretty fresh on the whole jazz thing so the more obscure the artists/recommendations the better.

Peace!

In college Bill Evans stuff was my official studying music, easy to relax/focus with it on. I had a bunch of random compilations on my iPod back then, think I had this http://www.discogs.c...s/master/392992 . Not obscure at all, but that's what I think of for jazz to chillout to.

Edit: Not really as "traditional" jazz but bossa nova type stuff can be very relaxing. Below are a couple I've picked up recently and listen to at home. I don't speak any Portuguese and stuff which I guess helps me not get distracted by the singing/lyrics as well, usually try avoiding stuff with lyrics in English when trying to focus.

Pretty cheap on wax too, think I paid about $10-15 for each

That Wave record is a classic, Red Giraffe nice. Bill Evans played on Kind of Blue, I stick to Ramsey Lewis and Grant Green

Grover Washington Jr. is my man

Idris Muhammed, Earl Klugh, Ahmad Jamal, guys like Steve Gadd, Bob James. They all played on each others records in the 70s, got the soulful jazz that bordered the chill FM 80s cruisin music

A love supreme. I don't think it's too deep for casual play and you didn't mention it. It does have heaps of depth though

Just go into any Starbucks and wait around for awhile. It'll be real "chill."

Nice...is that to scale?

Nah jp, that actually takes mad skill, so props.

Um, as far as chill jazz maybe some Lonnie Liston Smith or Stark Reality? Good luck on getting that Stark Reality on vinyl, though.

it's in Melbourne Australia man. I always get compliments on the music from customers cause no one ever knows what the fuck it is I'm playing haha... always spinning Knxwledge and Mndsgn, Ras G, Thelonious Monk, Mingus and Miles. Sometimes I even put on random soundcloud artists and Radio Juicy mixes. It's pretty cool, I get to listen to whatever music I like when I'm at work all day.

If you're ever in the country and come to Melbourne get at me. I think Joa is coming at the end of the year. We might be closed for holidays when he comes but I've told him I'll take him out for some burgers and beer anyway :P

Lonnie Liston Smith

Super chill. Good call.

Try Visions Of A New World and Expansions.

Other chill jazz/funk stuff I like (off the top of my head):

Norman Connors - Love From The Sun

Geroge Duke - The Inner Source

Weather Report s/t

Zawinul s/t

Herbie Hancock - Maiden Voyage & Speak Like A Child

a lot of Ahmad Jamal records fit the chill category nicely.

Good luck.

Heh. That's like 0.016% of the usual asking price. I bet some record hustlers were pissed when they saw that.
