why do people overrate jay so much?  he's like, never said anything in his raps.  he's not even technically the best rapper, on some talib kweli nerd shit.  hella dudes say he's the best ever, but i just can't even think of a verse he's done that impressed me.   he's got a good voice i guess

EDIT he's not even the best bling rapper i can think of!  he's not even the best gangster rapper i can think of!  he's not even a good mafioso rapper!

I can't understand why he is in the position he is either. Although I think he has kind of strong armed his way into it. BIG and Pac died and then Jay started his own brand of self promotion to be king of NY. Tell people something enough times and they may start to believe it. Plus he wifed B which was as much a power move as love.

I do really like Reasonable Doubt a lot though. Blueprint hasn't aged well imo. Neither has The Black Album really.

I am a, Roc representer
Hov’, summer to winter, Hov’, dead or alive

Twenty four seven, three sixty five

One CD or three hundred and sixty pies

What’s up to E and Kirk? Welcome home to Taj

Let no amount of money ruin this thing of ours

We run streets like drunks run street lights

We colliding with life as we speak
We knee deep in coke, we ki deep in ice

We flood streets with dope, we keep weed to smoke

We all fish, better teach your folk

Give him money to eat, then next week he’s broke

Cause when you sleep, he’s reaching for your throat

Word on the skreet, you reap what you sow

Not out of fear but love, love for the game

Roc family first, we never change man

That's some shit i like, not too complicated but it is pure, i feel it and it sounds good. And a good kanye beat too.

i agree.  never really gave R.D. a listen because i never felt jay that much.  i'm not even some mainstream hater or anything though.  i just don't really get the appeal of jayz.  sure izzo and big pimpin yadayadayada.  imo that's more due to yeezy and timb tho

EDIT i guess i can appreciate him for nothing else but a dope timbaland vehicle.

He a business man. He even raps dumb to be popular.

'If skills sold, truth be told, I'd probably be / Lyrically Talib Kweli / Truthfully I wanna rhyme like Common Sense / But I did 5 mill' - I ain't been rhyming like Common since'

Him and 50 cent are both better businessmen than they'll ever be rappers. Shows you where skill vs business knowledge gets you. If lyrically genius sold records MF DOOM and Aesop Rock would both be millionaires...

You should give RD a chance Grif...it pains me to say it because of what he's become, but it is a really good album. I only really got down with it about 5 years ago. Beats are great.

shit don't always need to be clever.

And sometimes jay can be clever.

Arm, leg, leg, arm, head - this is God body
Knowledge, wisdom, freedom, understanding - we just want our equality
Food, clothing, shelter - help a nigga find some peace
Happiness for a gangsta, ain't no love in the streets

I think his flow is rightcous, but his beat selection is generally wack.

On the same side, Action Bronson voice is wack, but his beat selection is rightcous.

Hard knock life is still a sick party banger. Other than that I've never really listened to any of his shit more than once or twice. It's made for mainstream society ie: easy to pick up and digest. Anything that takes 5-10 listens to digest is never going to get to jays level of recognition. Same with bronson now to. The dumber you rap the more popular (to a wider market) you'll be, cause people only need to hear it for 30 seconds on the radio to be a fan. Not taking anything away from either, I'm a big fan of bronson (as a person, not so much his music, or at least all his music...) majority of people just prefer music they can play whenever these days. Not music that they have to set aside time to sit down and listen to/take it all in... Sometimes I just get high, put my headphones on and listen to madvillain or fantastic damage for the 600th time or Horowitz or Händel. Most people don't do that, they listen to music in the car on their way to and from work or while they're getting dressed or some shit. That's jays market.
