Album's out now. Just listened to it. Great stuff. I've heard a lot of "There's A Riot Going On" comparisons and I think it definitely applies.

Had no idea it was coming out this year. It's been one of my most anticipated albums for years now, and then he just surprises us and drops it out of nowhere!!!

Can't wait to listen to it a little later tonight... anyone think it's album of the year material?

Man ... this album reminds me of how I first felt when Voodoo came out.  For some reason it gives me a Bilal "1st Born Second" feel with how there's this obvious Dilla vibe in the inspiration.  Y'all should check that album out, too.

Love it. It is amazing. He is such a talented song writer and so damn soulful, funky. But, I gotta say it lacks the sonic pop of Voodoo. Voodoo was such a collaboration of people (it was him, but think of all the other heads involved). I wish he had taken these songs and gathered the same production heads and applied the same production techniques. The album would be so much warmer and awe inspiring.


That being said 4/5!

Fave track: Till It's Done (Tutu)

Hearing a lot if Prince, Flying Lotus, Thundecat, Q Tip and yah I can hear Bilal on the fave track for me Till Its Done.

Black Messiah is another masterpiece from D'Angelo. This guy cannot make a bad record. Not sure where it stands with me, I think I like it more than Voodoo. I remember when I first heard Voodoo I thought it was great, but after repeatedly listening to it I found myself liking it more and more. Now it's one of my favorite albums. 

But upon hearing Black Messiah for the first time, I know that it could very easily be my favorite R&B/Neo Soul/Psychedelic Hip Hop/Funk/Soul album of the decade.

Off the top of my head, my favorite tracks are: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12

My interpretation is that this album is much happier, much brighter, much more mature. Introspection from a wiser man. Voodoo, by comparison is much darker. That being said, both are beautiful.

Still wish he let the same squad run the boards tho, small complaint, but a valid one.

It's far from wack IMO, but it lacks the warmth and depth of Voodoo. That being said, this album is awesome still!!! Black Messiah forever bra.
