i bet flying lotus is like the kanye west of the wonky world with a huge ego and he thinks he's god, inly works with jazz musicians and shit and doesnt make bangerz anymore, always trying to "elevate" the "game." and he now he feels like he's abve all his old LA buddies like samiyam and ras g and whoever else cuz theyre still chumps making beats with drums in 4/4 that dont even modulate or have a tempo change pfffffft.

this fucking guy lol ^

i know what you mean but i'm pretty sure this is more of a "jazz album" anyway, he's said as much at least.

but c'mon UTQC was pretty straightforward.

No no.
This is definelty a progression from UTQC. Lots of jazz for sure.

One thing I will say is I think he lets Thundercat go too crazy with the bass on a lot of tracks. Its hard to think of one on UTQC where he doesn't. And he has a solo, essentially on the Kendrick track.

Anyhow, he is still dope making the most interesting music of this generation.

^ Might be a prisoner of the moment post but "Never Catch Me" might well be the song of the year.

That has Deantoni Parks drumming on it. Dude is a complete genius. Completely re-inventing the drum set. Cool to see him finally getting the spotlight he deserves after so many years grinding it out.

edit: But I don't really like the track. Sounds too much like muzak.

that was the first song that really drew me into Flying Lotus...anyone else notice how this track and "The Nightcaller" sound very similar?  like too similar, i always was disappointed by that part of that track because it literally just sounded like the same song with a super-loud sawtooth synth cutting over the top of it.

Ha, never noticed how close they sound. The outro bit of nightcaller almost my favorite thing on that album.

You basing that just off this song, cuz, yeah, genius is a subjective term, but he's definitely doing some innovative shit that I don't see other drummers doing.

So I've been listening to Cosmogramma recently. I actually had never purchased it until last week. It's the only one of FLs that I didn't own. I had listened to it extensively when he streamed it in his Myspace when he released it. I thought it was awesome, but just forgot about it I guess since I had my fix.

Anyhow, I think its his best one. Maybe cause its fresh in my head, but its Los Angeles evolved and UTQC subdued if that makes any sense. Anyhow, tits blown.

Yah man.
Its soooooooo goood. It's better than Los Angeles and that was my favourite. Like I say, think its a balance between LA and UTQC. I am hoping that You're Dead is the most out there of his albums and he then begins to regress into more concentrated, funkier stuff. But really, whatever he does, I am going to be listening.

Not a huge fan of the track tbh. But I'm not a huge fan of Kendrick either. The instrumental is cool and everything, but It's not what I was hoping for a jazz oriented record. However, I'm sure that this track wasn't picked for it's awesomeness or it's representation of the album, but more for it's commercial performance for having Kendrick attached to it. Hopefully it brings FlyLo some new fans in it's wake. I know plenty of people who love Kendrick but have never even heard of FlyLo smh.

Yeah I mean if I were releasing an album and wanted to get attention/make some money, this would be the way to go I figure. The only reason it was on that LA Leakers thing is due to Kendrick being on it I imagine.

I'm still a bit mixed on the track, big fan of Kendrick but it still feels a little out of place on a Flylo record. Not as bad as it could have been though (for instance, if Kendrick did his angry voice thing). Def more interested in hearing Flylo production on Kendrick's new album.

Also, does anyone have the same concern about a Captain Murphy track on this Flylo record? I liked his original idea about keeping the two separate, kinda wish he would have stuck to that.

I think the track starts of incredible, but gets carries away. I wish FlyLo would work more in pop structure.

She was gooood.

I kid, I kid.

I just like pop structure in general. I mean, most of these jazz albums that cats sample from, its the intro, or one bit and they loop it. Never gets boring. But on these progressive, 70s jazz tracks, as soon as it goes all "jazzy", I kinda lose my appreciation for it.

Anyhow, FL is kinda doing that. But, as I say, his resume is so potent that I cant help but respect it and want to listen to it.

He is the miz-ann man.

mangoes, what did you think of Thundercat's first album vs second one? Seemed like the second one took more of a pop approach and wan't too big of a fan (still a great album, but not as good as first imo)

I would have to give the second a closer listen. I remeber liking the first better, overall. But the second had some amazing tracks. I am not familiar enough off the top of my head to really say.
