What's goin on here guys?

boxset%20-%20image2.jpg

Included inside of ‘The King of Beats’ Box Set Ma Dukes Collector’s Edition:

- (4) 10 inch Vinyl Records featuring music from Jay Dee’s ‘Batches’
- (1) Special Edition Cassette containing (4) unreleased tracks from J Dilla’s #LostScrolls

- (1) ‘The King of Beats’ commemorative booklet contains interviews with his peers, scholars, etc. along with rare and never before seen photos with provocative insight and perspective of the early years of Jay Dee’s career

* ‘The King of Beats’ Ma Dukes Yancey Collector’s Edition Box Set includes a Limited Edition 3 inch floppy disk containing (1) unreleased J Dilla production, multi-tracked and formatted specifically to upload within the actual E-Mu SP-1200 machine.

SOOOOOOOO what the fuck is the deal with this set? I forgot about it, but Rolling Stone (...) just put something out about it featuring this track as an example:

Yet another confusing chapter in the posthumous releases of Dilla. I am stumped as to whether these are all instrumentals or not, what with "Filth" containing vocals...though it's called "king of beats" so it'd be pretty weird for it not to be mostly beats. and what the hell is going on with the estate. I thought Egon was creative director of that stuff, why is he not involved at all? I feel like I'm in the dark again. this one is referred to as "the king of beats ma dukes yancey collector's edition", and I guess is...not coming out on Pay Jay? Ma Dukes seems to be the guiding force on this one, I'm fucking confused. boxset%20-%20image3.jpg

amazingly, that shit is apparently made out of WOOD (peep the hinges), so I'm guessing this "limited" set will be pretty fucking steep

A floppy disk you need $1500 to hear! Now that's what I'm talking about.

Love that Dilla verse as usual. Tho, you can tell this was his first take, cause, not only did he say it, but it sounds a bit sloppy.mdila is still one of my favorite MCs. Why he doesn't get more props not really sure. Dude is a jazz legend!!! Or somehg like that., !!!::;:)$$$$

Well the pre-order is up but it's $207 + shipping ($51 to US, $130 to me in NZ).
I love Dilla but this seems like a total ripoff.

I like the fact that they can get stuff out but the way it's been coming out is terrible. Why can't we just get some regular releases? Instrumental LPs? What's with all the bells and whistles? We just want beats and some unreleased stuff with vocals on it like Filth. Everything else is unnecessary distraction. Doubt he would have done it this way

Yeah all the stupid gimmicks/etc are weak, would have easily bought a 2LP (or even just the 4x10") if they had put that out. Oh well

^ well since no one has exhumed his grave and started selling his bones, YET, technically he is being left to rip. There is such a thing as a legacy though, as all the books about old dead famous people can attest to.

^^ Agreed.

I mean he left behind a huge catalog that's bigger than most producers now that are still alive.

They should always put out his stuff (as long as they don't alter it in any way and try to make it appealing to the masses). But just drop the extra BS. Give us some CDs, Vinyl, and maybe a t-shirt or poster.

I wasn't referring to this specific boxset when I wrote about a legacy. I was replying to someone who was essentially saying they'd rather not see anything else come out with his name attached to it ever again.

This track is dope!  Definitely agree with those saying Dilla remains an underrated emcee.  We don't need to qualify it by saying he was the best producer on the mic, he's got one of the most unique flows ever, period.  With regards to his legacy, specially the barrage of posthumous releases, I think initially things started out as a way to honor him and do his work justice; however, and its been this way for years now, for better or worse 99.9% of the products released under his name are a complete money grab.  For me, the most creative and virtuous of Dilla materials after his unfortunate passing was the Bling47 Breaks: Dilla Edition that Waajeed did - - most things after that were about the $, not Pay Jay neither, because there is a difference.

His fam is wanting to make money off his name... That sounds harsh, but its true. What is also true, is that, his family want the world to know his name, not because he is a money making product, but because they believe is his music, and want people to hear it.

Its a fucking capitalist society we live hombres. Get used to it. People got to get paid.

He also racked up a shedload of debt when he got sick. Money that his family is still responsible for paying back. I can understand why Ma Dukes is willing to put her seal of approval on a lot of these projects that a lot of 'hardcore' fans wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole *cough*RebirthofDetroit*cough*.

Ma Dukes got nuff bills to pay mon. She racked up a lot of expenses due to her sons illness and NO UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE. If dude lived in France, UK, Canada, Sweeden, .... His moms would not have such a massive debt. Support Ma Dukes.

Heard Jay Stay Paid and it was sad. We don't need anyone talking over Jay Dee beats. Anyone spitting on posthumous shit should be making their own fucking beats with him in mind like the rest of us.

The way PayJay is getting Dee tunes out is so absurd with all this gimmicky bullshit. I think digital/or vinyl of unreleased beats selected by PBW, Madlib, Shoes, or whoever would have been sufficient to get a good amount of funds. Even just rips of the tapes would have been fine (at least for the fanboy I am)

Even then, selling Jay's beats shouldn't be their only means of trying to pay off his medical bills. It's been how many years/ releases now? Get a kickstarter or some shit. For all I know it's paid off, and if so Ma and the rest need to get a job.

I'm not too familiar with the relationship between the Yancey family, ST, and friends these days. What's the deal with that?

I know Shoes is the only one who speaks out against the way they run shit, and I'm behind him 100% He truly loved the man and does his best to show he did more than anyone.

Jay Stay Paid, while definitely not feeling like a "true" Dilla release, legitimately feels to me like its about as classy as it's gonna get in terms of the "tribute" albums. There's too many features, but that's about it. Maybe the tracklist isn't 100% Dilla-esque, but supervised by Pete Rock, Dilla's idol, legitimizes the idea of the project a lot to me. Though Nature Sounds is still utter shit.

The rest of the stuff though, doesn't seem to have been given even the JSP treatment. EXCEPT for the upcoming The Diary, which seems to be getting almost MORE love and care than expected.

Anybody know what the story behind Jay Love Japan is?
