Not sure if I will have time this week but I just wanted to say the roots fucking rule.

I was going to write a whole thing about the roots but I'll save it for another time.

That track 'sleep' is approaching perfection. The beat, the hook, tariq's verse. It's all just so gravy.

But having said that there are so many ill quirky sounding drums in there that I totally understand using it as sample material.

If I were to enter this week (and with the sleep idea taken out) I'd be looking at the drums from 'Rahzel v ?' And there's a little acapella part on a black thought freestyle from a tony touch mix tape that I was just listening to...

Looking forward to listening!

Can only speak from my own point of view on this but I'm here because all you cats share a common interest in sample based beat production. Whether you sound like dilla or flylo is irrelevant to me. If I hear your beat and I smile and nod my head then f* that's all that matters (isn't it?).

on the time stuff... if it's 30 seconds and dope then i'll put it on repeat... if it's 8 minutes and dope then I'll play the whole thing. if its whack from the get go then I might skip forward a bit (still whack), turn it off.

The community is in the music and I honestly think some dudes are missing that! I have progressed so far in the last 3/4 weeks since being here solely because I make a beat and think 'yeah this shit is tight' and then I hear how everyone else has flipped it and think to myself 'I didn't even know that shit was possible!' and that pushes me to learn more, play around more and try and improve. Someone saying my bass is muddy or my highs need work doesn't really help me... All I want to do is make beats that are as well thought out, mixed and dynamic as the guys who are winning and making the nice stuff every week.

anyway, that was a rant haha. Basically try not to take this all to seriously... enjoy it. Listen to the good stuff, don't listen to the bad stuff...

peace.

Yes my man that, "serious" word is what causes all the trauma, it's all about the fun! ;)

CONGRATS to you two for the win, well deserved! This week is a little challenging to me, but I figured out something I guess lol... The Roots are cool! This just made me appreciate them more, so good choice!

This is what I came up with, I hope some of you like it... can't wait to hear what some of you will put out!

ummm yes... I quite enjoyed making this one.... had like 5 tracks made from this sample and the roots sample idea....

these are the two that made it... so here you go to hear...

First half:

everything from a sample except bass (it sounded flat without it) & the Aesop Rock Vocal (very little don't worry)

additional sample drums: "rolling with heat ft. Talib Kweli" off of Phrenology

used both Muma's and Scottie's sample

just you know added some distortion and other fun effects

Second half:

just Scottie's sample

drums from a standard pad... I pitch shifted a little

bass outside... synth my little distort then filter thing...

vocal skit: outro off illadelph halflife

Good samples and theme. My favorite Roots album is Things Fall Apart. I managed to put something together that wouldn't have sounded out of place on that album.

goodtimes

first half i used the swell sounds from the beginning of break you off and theres some drum sounds from what they do. second half has a little guitar flutter from what they do as well as some sax from the philadelphia experiment. which i know doesn't count as a roots sample but the beat just needed some sax and its kind of related.

Congrats Scottie and MUMA! Great rules this week. Here's my entry

Used little chops from both samples. All other samples in the beat are from songs of The Roots except the bassline. I hope you like it

roots week... fuckin yeeaah. basically ended up cutting up a few of their drums/beatbox/vocals and adding MUMAs sample and some sounds of my own. tried to keep the whole live(ish) feel to my flip, since the first drums i got were leaning that way. cant remember how many tracks i ended up using (dont feel right, tip the scale, esaywhuman?)

been hearing some sweet flips this week already, thanks to the winners, cool concept this week once again.

oh good morning! i didn't see you there.

Opening (gated) drums are from Get Busy, later heavy drums are from that commercial where Questlove drums at Guitar Center, snare roll is from the end of Right On, vox chops are from the Don't See Us acapella, some weird vocal effects come from the middle of Star, there's a bit of Joanna Newsom singing from Right On, some brief scratching is from Get Busy and that's all.

Thanks MUMA for suggesting TAL for synth/bass - there are three of them in there too, I think. The rest is just Roots.

Congrats again Scottie and MUMA.
