MUMA and Scottie Present: The Roots Week

Okay_Africa_Roots.png

In honor of The Root's 11th album (not including the Costello, Legend, live, or best of albums of course) "...And Then You Shoot Your Cousin" which came out Tuesday, I wanted this week's theme to revolve around them. Eleven quality albums, amazing. Okay, Tipping Point may have been a slight bump in the road, but damn can't really say that considering maybe one of their top 5 songs is on it (Star), and the so good DinDaDa cover. Thanks to the co-winner MUMA for allowing this special rule to happen! MUMA and I have each provided a 10 second or so sample for you to flip.

Rules:

1) No Time Limit

2) Outside drums- allowed (yes you probably (although not required) should use some Quest Love drums...)

3) Outside instrumentation: why yes of course.

MUMA's sample (very 2000ish Roots if I may be so bold): http://www75.zippysh...12333/file.html

Scottie's sample (Early Roots' (Organix, Do You Want More...!!!??!!?!?): http://www42.zippysh...36305/file.html

Special Rule:

1) You must incorporate at least one sample from The Roots. A drum break, a vocal sample, a clip from Fallon, some actual instrument samples, the epic Rahzel and Quest battle tracks, anything Roots related (why yes, you can sample Quest on Chapelle Show, only solo act I'll allow). And by related I mean the majority of the band must be involved (e.g. no Scott Storch raps below, no Rahzel "All I know.." etc.) Any Roots' album is open game. However there are some limits to this. Throwing an acapella over your beat won't cut it (although please by all means remix any Roots' song you would like if the acapella is available), however if you were to use say a Patty Crash chop (see most recently "Never") or Joanna Newsome chop ("Right On") that would be cool.

Note: I realize maybe not everyone is into The Roots like I am (what is wrong with you?!) So I have taken the time to put together a little mix of sounds from their discography you can utilize, but please don't feel like you only have to use this stuff, use whatever Roots material you can work with.

Roots snippets: http://www25.zippysh...62082/file.html

Upload your beat to Soundcloud, include "STBB 377" in the title and POST TO THIS FORUM by Wednesday at Midnight PACIFIC time. You may also add it to the Stones Throw Beat Battle Soundcloud Group.

Vote - by Friday at Midnight PACIFIC time

Winner: post new sample, rules, etc - by Saturday Noon NYC time and upload the sample here: http://www.zippyshare.com

 Wow. I have further clarified what I meant by Roots related. You can use this, but it won't satisfy the special rule. I'm also assuming you're being humorous!

please please please please enforce some sort of time limit...we have 70+ contestants every week, all of whom feel like they can justify 3-4 min. instrumentals.  that equals to about 3 1/2-4+ hours of just listening to everyone else's beats.  at least if we shortened the limit we'd have much less of a chance of running into the same, weekly problem of people skipping over certain beats-- i would prefer if we all just got to the point.  but maybe that's just me...

Not necessarily off YouTube, but that's certainly an option. You can use some of the stuff I provided, or if you have any of their albums, any source is fine.

I'm loving the sound of this battle. Big fan of the roots since illadelph halfl life and managed to catch a show of theirs in the uk a few years back.

Congrats and respect to the joint winners of my first battle. I can't wait to get stuck into this one.

Do we need to use both Scottie and MUMA's samples? Or just one.

Congratulations on the wins! Nice rules this week.

I'm cool with people using one or both, doesn't matter to me. I didn't discuss this with MUMA, so I can't speak for him.

I definitely will try to work both in somehow.

hot sugar is the producer, and hes not part of the normal roots line up

(i dont think aaron livingston is either, even tho hes toured with them)

but it is a cut straight from a roots LP

ive wanted to do a remix on this track for a while now

lemme know

Yeah been thinking about this, why do I bother putting any effort in to changes drops, surprises and what not, if peeps are only going to listen to 30 secs all that skipping ya missing my gold ha ha!!, maybe we do need a 60 sec time limit, prob take away that whole daunting feeling of listening to the beats into, can't wait to listen. Got to be said I don't view these battles in the same way anymore, battles are really meant to be bang bang, done, this i don't think has been, don't get me wrong it's not bad, but this is like an intense beat training production tune up ground, to sharpen your skills, the biggest thing for me now is why do we battle ?, status, improvement, community, get yourself heard, improve your game. hunt for people that sound like Dilla or Flylo cos you have listened to their catalog's inside out, or purely because this side of Hiphop is so broad and avant garde and it speaks to you.

I remember last year a beat maker got all shitty with me when I won, and promptly left, took the mod thing like it was my full time job, but went potty from my beat being 20 secs over, he thought the 2 min time limit was a standing rule, it wasn't, it was the old server rules and ended up being copy n pasted each week, and people added they're own spins on what they read. To be honest, if he had manned up stuck it out, spent another year on here, his beats might of improved, I couldn't work out what he wanted from these battles, but my god did that cat bitch.

Rule wise not one of us in life will like being told what to do on this forum, ( I'll bet my whole set up on that ), or how to do it, we would not be making our own beats, we wouldn't be so individual, you wouldn't be who you are. Rules are only in existence for people that have no consciousness and have to follow a guide. I like the word objective rather than rules, you feel like your achieving something, than being told.

...I guess that's the trick right?...  improve your skils so you can make the first 30 seconds of your song interesting enough to keep on listening to the rest...

The visual display of the track can sometimes help you out a little too... but last week I noticed that SC made those less detailed... like thick lines now... which I find a pitty anyway...

I've noticed over time everybody has different opinions... at one point the Topic read: No timelimit ever again

So changes won't easily be made... and like last weeks victory we just have to self regulate...

If a winner feels he needs to DQ somebody for not following his rules he should do so...   No one else is gonna do it

Both samples used. Mumas for the bass and Scotties for the main. Additional sounds pulled from the roots album 'dilla joints' Quas added for seasoning.

Enjoy.

P.S. Big congrats to the dual win guys! well deserved.

Rules are only in existence for people that have no consciousness and have to follow a guide. I like the word objective rather than rules, you feel like your achieving something, than being told.

Can only speak from my own point of view on this but I'm here because all you cats share a common interest in sample based beat production. Whether you sound like dilla or flylo is irrelevant to me. If I hear your beat and I smile and nod my head then f* that's all that matters (isn't it?).

on the time stuff... if it's 30 seconds and dope then i'll put it on repeat... if it's 8 minutes and dope then I'll play the whole thing. if its whack from the get go then I might skip forward a bit (still whack), turn it off.

The community is in the music and I honestly think some dudes are missing that! I have progressed so far in the last 3/4 weeks since being here solely because I make a beat and think 'yeah this shit is tight' and then I hear how everyone else has flipped it and think to myself 'I didn't even know that shit was possible!' and that pushes me to learn more, play around more and try and improve. Someone saying my bass is muddy or my highs need work doesn't really help me... All I want to do is make beats that are as well thought out, mixed and dynamic as the guys who are winning and making the nice stuff every week.

anyway, that was a rant haha. Basically try not to take this all to seriously... enjoy it. Listen to the good stuff, don't listen to the bad stuff...

peace.

Yeah that would be cool, according to the linear notes it was co-produced by Questlove, and considering it was on Undun, yeah that's cool (I kind of look at that album as one long track anyways). I'll make a little further clarification in the rules, any Roots' album is open game, (so yeah if you want to use Dynamite! that's cool, Quest actually drummed on that).

As for a time limit, well win and you too can make the rules. :D  Whether said rules will be followed, well that's another topic I suppose.
