i was thinking the same thing Jondis lol. just sidechain, using a gate or something like that, but he said no fx. would that be considered using fx?

haa yeah man, sidechaine for life. for fx's he means like reverb or delay as the tail ends of whatever gets delayed will play on top of other things.

FX are fine! Just don't let them break rule #6.

I was saying earlier I don't see why you couldn't sidechain something, export it, sidechain that sidechain, export it, and so on.

You say keys are OK, but um, what about playing chords? Is that OK

That is an excellent question. I thought about this, let's say no. No chords.

Monophony has roots in like medieval era music - gregorian chanting and all that was before harmony was invented - no one apparently thought to layer different notes on each other, so let's stick with it.

I'm excited. It isn't a good challenge if everyone likes it! This should be unendingly frustrating but will produce some very unique and interesting results.

Thanks!! I think probably yes to all of that.

No you can't, but I'm sure you can bung it in there somewhere in between...

HEY SO I JUST LISTENED TO BIRDDROP's FLIP and I love the sound of an acapella layered on top of an otherwise monophonic choppy beat. Grifty wanted to do that too so you have your choice now: if you'd like to layer an acapella over your beat, we'll frown slightly but then nod our heads and look the other way :)

Sorry to make this more confusing, but it just sounds good.

Use gates and compressors to keep things separate perhaps?

Well, I had fun with this one. The sample is chopped do that the kick drum is the only audio when it's triggered. Sounds like a really harsh sidechain.

Sup guys? Congrats on win breakmaster.. that beat was nuts.

I had a few questions with the rules, but just reread and I think I'm clear now.

"Monophonic" - I believe - applies to all sounds, which means that ONLY one sound - be it a high hat, or a kick, or a bass, snare, or the sample - can be playing at any given time. I think this means that we can't have a bass note playing alongside a kick, etc. Also it must mean that we can't use any part of the sample that presents two sounds at the same time (ie the woman singing + notes).

Interesting concept? Indeeeeed. Probably will yield some very different sounding tunes, and I look forward to listening. But probably will hit the bench for this round.

Monty: you're right about everything except the sample. He said it counts as only one element no matter what's in your chop. But you can't layer it on top of itself though (ie delay or chords). Also, you may lay an a cappella on top of your track if you wish

Sidechained drums over sample and then hand cut chips all the high hats out of the sample as I feel they weren't fully muting it like the bass + snare. Came out choppy as but I enjoyed the process (and got carpal tunnel syndrome). Good rule, killer sample.

Peace.

There's nothing in the rules bout delay or reverb. That is allowed right?

And drums need to be monophic too if im right? so no layering instruments or fx

Soz for the questions dudes
