GAS = Gear Acquisition Syndrome

I wanted to make a topic where we could talk about new gear we're peeping or pieces you wanna add to your set-up.

Lately I've been peeping the sp-404 mostly for live stuff and just something to funk around on, I'll probably still make the bulk of my beats on my MPC 1000.

I've also been eyeing a couple of synths like the Ronald Alpha Juno 1, the Moog Realistic Concertmate MG-1, the Casio CZ-5000 or CZ-1. I really just need something to add synths to my beats.

On a side note, what do you guys think about DAWs vs multitrack recorders, I've been looking for something better than garageband to record my beats into. I was thinking about Logic since it's only like 200 bucks.

Dude I would..... Seriously recommend reason. I know I'm like the boards resident reason geek but it's really freaking awesome for quick music making and rolling with inspiration and stuff. The proprietary plug in system has a really awesome Juno clone for fifty bucks too and a solid voyager clone for eighty

I bought a four track yesterday for $50. Very cool

Check out the roland d50 or yamaha dx7 if you want cheap but good synths

Im looking at the sp range which doesn't seem to be a rip off like the 505 555 and 606, in the second hand bracket, lot cheaper than the 404 & 303 etc, if it came out Dilla and Madlib used this bits the prices would shoot up, Also plan to get a Korg Microkorg and run the sp into that and use the filter. Multi track is cool if it's tape, otherwise it can sod off to be honest, Daws are pretty much a multitrack recorder thats digital, for me we've had digital long enough to realize, it's about true analog, even if you do all your stuff in a daw, then record it to a multitrack tape for example, the finished sound isn't going to sound as cold as digital does. Thinking about making my own valve speakers as well for recording drums through, when I convince my Misses to let me get a drum kit, really on a mission this year to harness my own sound. As far as Daw's go there is not a best one, it's about what one is best for you, the way you want to work and think usually leads you to equipment that suits you, especially if you take your time and research stuff.

By the way has any one got any idea where you can do some sort of side by side comparison of all the sp samplers, it doesn't seem to exist, anywhere, I mean the specs of each one. Not this ones better cos Dilla used it.

^I was thinking about doing everything in a daw, manly because it's super easy to mix, edit, and record in them, and then sending everything to a tape deck.

I'm not really looking to get beck into software programs and synths again. The next DAW I buy will be just for recording and mixing.

Thanks for the suggestion man, I'll check those out. I would love to see some pics of the 4 track. what are your plans for it?

I use the 4 track to record my drums, synths, samples and possibly some mcing all onto seperate tracks. Its got a nice sound. It just gives me more possibilitys then just using a sp 404 and ipad

I use a sp404sx. however I know a little about the rest. Nothing technical

202: runs on batteries, most lo fi sounding, only sp with realistic pitch (no time stretch), Cant save anything, when you apply an effect you cant go back, smart media card

303: doesnt run on batteries, lo fi sounding (cleaner then 202), can resample with an external source, Bad pitch, resampling, pattern sequencer, smart media card

404/404sx: runs on batteries, fastest loading times, resampling, over 20 effects, more polyphony then the 303 and 202, better pattern sequencer then the 303, SD card (up to 32 gigs of samples), more pads then 303 and 202

505: doesnt run on batteries, smart media card, lots of effects, pitch function (similar to map to 16 pads on MPC), Proper screen with actuall wave diagram

555: doesnt run on batteries, Most powerfull sp in the series, 16 pads, looper, shit effects, SD card (same cappacity as 404)

606: doesn run on batteries (not 100% sure), works the most like an MPC, breaks really quickly, best pads, not many effects

lol i like that phrase, i definitely have a case of GAS haha. currently most everything i do is on my 1000 too, then i just resequence everything in FL Studio as opposed to doing numerous bars on the mpc. i've been looking into the korg kaossilators recently, mainly the pro. my buddy let me borrow the older model yellow one that wasn't the pro and i was making some pretty cool shit in a matter of minutes, not to mention there's a lot of cool synth sounds to be sampled. i think the kaossilator pro has sd card function, 4 loop banks, effects, and midi in/out ports. there's a lot of awesome gear out there, i feel like i want something different every week haha.

Cheers for the effort man. It was the sample rates and which ones compress the sound before you start, had a look at the 555 the fx sound fine, also seems to have the vinyl thing off the 303, what makes you say they're shit, it's sound and tone I'm after rather than work flow, as I'll probably run it into midi into Maschine and then back out again, e.g 404og into maschine back out into the 555.

I'm the same way I'm always checking stuff out and before i can get I'm already eyeing the next purchases.

I've seen people use those kaossilators they are really neat and seem like something that would work great in a live setup.

The 555 has allot of effects. I have just heard that lots of people say they are abit week. Less noticable basically. Good machine though

Yeah seems from the 404sx all effects don't have as much punch, the vinyl sim on the 555 is meant to be the same as the the 303, I think one thing that gets over looked is the 303 and the 404og both compress instantly the others don't, think this has big part to play, I'm thinking I'm going to get both the 555 and a 404og, knowing me though I'll end up with a 303.

are you going to combine MIDI/analog functions with some combo of the SP's and your Maschine?

Certainly am Sonny Bob!! got a korg microkorg as well, gonna run my drums through the dirtiest sp, into the synth to filter stuff, then compress using the other sp hopefully into maschine, which will be running as a vst inside of ableton ha ha!! this way I can then use the synth into the sp as well if I want to play straight in, the options are quite big and I'll need to play around a lot until these gadgets accept they're my padawans!! I need an ADHD set up for my ADHD creative flow. The next thing I'm gonna save up for is an SP12 turbo, and reel to reel.
Oh and guys when you think skint, you will be skint, you need to think in a way to attract the law of money for your creative needs and it will pop up, very strange what a little bit of belief can do, with the right intent behind it.

Stay away from Novation, stuff isn't made that well, breaks really easily, and the sounds are influenced mainly by drum n bass. Sounds amazing, but I'd lay my life on the line to say knobs and keys will be popping off before long. Check Arturia out, well made stuff, the Roland Gaia looks pretty sick.

Some Guy up North to me, worked out at £160, so they've gone up quite a bit over a year, the unit looks pretty much brand new, just waiting for my 404 og to arrive now. Gonna make my first beat in a moment.

I copped a 303 of ebay a couple of years back but the RCAs crapped out on me. I don't know why but I seem to have bad luck with used electronics.
