Hi hat loop, copy it. filter one of them low pass layer it then take certain notes out giving you accents.

yea, great idea btw. Nothing hard here, rly, I remember once I liked hihats in one jazz song, uhhhhh....

there's also a sidechain compression on hats triggered by the kick. I'm going to reduplicate them right now.

I thought that was just adsr on copies of the sample loop, think ya right, I like it hen producers think about the hats, some don't and just shove them in, they so important to the groove though, Intriged to hear what you come up with man!!

so, my small report.

tempo plays huge part here. it's 59 bpm or 118bpm, depends oh how you got used to work. It's rly slow.

That groovy feel is created JUST by the velocity altering. At least how I saw it, everything followed the grid hard, no swings.

Hat choice is the key element here (mine was wrong). And you will need to find "right" velocity for your offbeat hats. It's very interesting here. You pick the hat that's easily recognizable some memorable sounding one. and you place it with it's full velocity on beats. But you need to lower the velocity of the hat to an extend when it's still audible, but lost it's "face" in the mix. So it becomes "just a random hat" not that special one that you've picked. Dunno if that's clear, but that was what I did.
ALSO!! I've noticed that some of the hats in the track are, how to say, "dragged". So they sound a lil bit like open hats, i also tried that, even though my hat was notably different, i think it produced the desired effect.
Check out what i did and if you think it's what you wanted, I'll explain, if not, eh, gotta keep trying'!

Really close Holmes, like yours a lot, checked with headphones I'm not so sure about the sidechain, I think its where they are placed in the stereo field they're on top of my head, and I can hear that first hit all the way through on the first beat, actually thinking now its just a slightly off loop that fits perfectly, and sticks out when the off beat hits.

yer. after listening to it in headphones i realized there was no sidechains on hats! In my track I used sidechain + i increased the attack time on that first hat which turned out to be good technique but not for that case, heh.

I like the assumption of yours that it can be slightly offbeat, but i cannot confirm it nor deny. :)

am i having deja vu, or did we already do this thread with a Clams Casino track?
& while i'm here, i've been wanting to do a quick thread to figure out some hats myself...

so, anybody wanna tell me how to get mine to sound like this?

i know the gist of what to do, i just haven't found the right combination of adsr, compression and filter to get it right.

I hope you do realize that with that sound quality of the first clip you can only have a slight impression of the hats. They are barely heard. To much of high end is cut.
hmhm, think i've found a better sounding version and they do sound nice. will try to get their essense...

but what do you mean about that compression filter thing? Do you want yours to sound EXACTLY the same? Or just how to create that feel those hats create?

...that's the actual quality of the song, i don't know what you're trying to say lol. i just want to make my hats sound less like cymbals and more like clicks-- but it's really not a big deal, i bet i can figure it out on my own once i sit down with my 303. it's just that i was seeing if anyone on here knew of any shortcuts i could take so that i wouldn't have to spend a few hours experimenting.
