I really do wish we had file rules, like wav, 24 bit, thats it, or it has to be sourced from vinyl.

I really am a digibetic... what does that 128kBit entail? ... was that my sample?... what are the implications?
I convert it to wav. in cool edit and then chop it up to use it in reason...

128 kilobit per second is the datarate of both compressed mp3 files - that makes 64 kBit per channel (L+R). That's a really low audio resolution so to speak and you can hear a loss in audio quality especially it in the hihats, the bass and in the stereofield. Because the CODEC (that's the alorithm that creates the mp3) replaces a lot of the audio information of the source material with noise, basically. And the lower the bitrate gets the more noise is introduced to the original signal so that it becomes less transparent and gets washier and washier. If you listen to the Donald Byrd joint, you can hear it in the high hats and the cymbals - its all sounds a bit sizzly and undefined. In comparisson, a 16Bit 44.1 Khz .wav has a Bitrate of 1411 kilobit per second - that's 10 x more Data than the mp3 files have, about 705 kbit per channel. So a lot of information is lost by encoding it to mp3 to such low bitrates. Nowadays - besides the fact that mp3 is outdated - aac is the new way to go - the usual Bitrate for mp3 in CD quality is considered 192 kbit/s. The highest bitrat for mp3 is 320. A lot of info about this can be found on the net.

EDIT:
Transcoding from a low mp3 bitrate to a wav format makes it sound even worse due to the way the waveform is recalculated and it's form is approximated. IIt's a complex process which has to do with sample rates, bit depth, dithering and a lot of technical mathematical stuff. So if you don't have the CD at home, to rip the wav off of, it is a waste of time to do it. Just mind: transcoding (formattting from one compressed format into another one) = always bad! ;)

:$ ..That sucks!.. I have it ripped from a friends original CD aswell... this one came from the internet, had it on my desktop... due to the hurry yesterday I quickly uploaded that! ...pitty...

Yo David, that was just my additional rule/suggestion.. too bad it's not set in stone as I was not the O(los)riginal rulemaker...
It is s'thing I like to do if the sample lends itself... a true flip...

Anyway...have fun with it! :)

used both samples for the drums, one for the snare, and the other for the bongo/percussion arrangement. Used synths to sculpt the rest of it

I think I'll pass this week. I've only managed to loop that Donald Byrd sample and chop it at few points and also add the guitar to back up some parts because the drums and synths and trumpets on that track are just so perfect and I have no idea what to do with them other than loop them (I want to stick to the no outside drums rule as well, plus I just can't work with that guitar track and I don't know why, it just doesn't sound right to me). However I feel that I wouldn't stand a chance and I'm not sure whether everyone would be ok with me just looping it (I've added some shit over it though) and it would seem pretty basic since in most of the entries I have listened to I cannot even recognize the samples lol. I haven't got much time to start from scratch and I really love listening to these parts I looped. I'll have to think about it a bit more.
