illness.

i hope this collection of beats is a little bit more focused and meaningful than the last one...
i dug Sam Baker's Album, but i felt like there was something crucial missing in it that made it less moving than other projects typical of Brainfeeder. he still makes dope-ass beats though, i've heard a lot of cats trying to bite his style lately.

i'm interested to hear his rapping...all i've heard so far is that intro to that one beat off of the last album where he was freestyling in a kinda jokey, non-serious way.

Samiyam was on last week's Sketchbook radio. Played some songs from the new album at the end of the show.

Couldn't find the link but here's a rip

He's signed to Warp now, which really isn't that far of a leap from Brainfeeder. Warp is the parent label of Brainfeeder, if I remember correctly.

James Yancey was the oldest of four children including a younger brother (Earl), a younger sister (Martha) and a younger brother, John, also a rapper/producer known as Illa J. The family lived in a house near McDougall and Nevada, on the east side of Detroit.[3] He developed a vast musical knowledge from his parents (his mother is a former opera singer and his father was a jazz bassist). According to his mother, he could "match pitch perfect harmony" by "two-months old", to the amazement of musician friends and relatives.[4] He began collecting vinyl at the age of two and would be allowed to spin records in the park, an activity he enjoyed tremendously as a child.[4]

Along with a wide range of musical genres, Yancey developed a passion for hip hop music. After transferring from Davis Aerospace Technical High School to Detroit Pershing High School, he met classmates T3 and Baatin, and became friends with them through mutual love of rap battles. The three formed a rap group called Slum Village.[5] He also took up beatmaking using a simple tapedeck as the center of his studio.[1] During these teenage years he "stayed in the basement alone" with his ever-growing collection of records, perfecting his craft. He later told Pete Rock when they met years later that "I was trying to be you."[6]

Sigh. I can't believe I had to step in and create this thread. There was a time on this message board when a SAMIYAM album/LP/cassette on ST would have been up on this message board even before ST announced it. To quote Jackie Treehorn "Regrettably, it's true. Standards have fallen in [hip-hop message board etiquette]."

Admittedly the old guard such as myself, Meadowz, Buns, Primate, Liv haven't been as active in the past but damn. The ST section of STMB really needs some help. Seems all that we've been doing here is telling the new bloods to stop asking for samples and tracklists for the Medicine Shows. Madlib ain't the only guy on ST and y'all need to "diversify yo bonds."

Having said this: this albums snippets are crazy. I was chatting with DJ Primate and I noticed that one of those beats "On a Bad Day" (the only one I recognized back from when Sam was last releasing music in 2010/2011) was at least 2 years old. It makes me question how much of this album is actually "new", maybe they're just dope beats he's giving to us an apology for the youtube mixtape he called his first album. Not complaining either way.
