STONES THROW BEAT BATTLE:

DOOM REMIX 4

Melody

Posted Image

Sixfingerz get props over here for winning Round Three of the DOOM Remix Project. Like last week, he has graced us with two samples to sink our teeth into. He's also cool with y'all flipping either one sample or both if your heart desires. As always, please feel free to share the thread with whomever you like so we can get a few more felonious perpetrating participants taking their stab at the Villain's work.

Samples:http://www61.zippysh...78526/file.html

http://www61.zippysh...53375/file.html

Acapella: http://www43.zippysh...72680/file.html

Flip the sample(s) to make a beat and use the acapella to make DOOM accompany it.
Upload your beat to the DOOM Remix BB group on soundcloud and in this thread*

by 12:00 am Monday PST and vote in this thread by 10:00 pm PST Wednesday.

You MUST vote to win.

Production Rules:

  • Choose which sample you want to flip or flip both
  • Outside drums and bass are allowed
  • Outside keys/synths and other instruments are allowed
  • Other acapellas may only be used for a chorus/cut
  • Vocal samples/skits are allowed
  • Cuts/scratches are allowed
  • Winner posts new sample, acapella, and any rule changes by 12:00 pm PST Wednesday^

*If you have any questions about how to post soundcloud links to the thread please use this as a reference.

^Once the winner has been chosen I'll reach out to her/him with a list of DOOM acapellas I currently have available, you pick one, then I'll send you the link to post.

Congrats Six! Really nice sample choices, except 64kbps is about 25% of CD audio quality. 64kbps is also the lowest audio quality on youtube on videos at 240p resolution. Haha! It's all good. I just wish these poor-quality formats would disappear of the net.

it's not about the quality of the sample, it's the quality of the producer.

Ha ha yeah ! if Madlib uses it he's godlike if one of us does that, no one will listen to the beat, sometimes the quality of the sample can screw it completely, I can remember when DJ Sapien posted the most toxic sounding mp3, and everyone when on the hunt for their own, due to to timestretching, and it becoming unworkable. You have to have a good source to manipulate decently, you can't tell me you actually enjoy, that youtube water compression sound going on in your tune. Kids there is a difference between natural grit and it sounding shit and sometime I think the whole Lo-bit grit shit goes way to far, and Hungry does know his stuff, he's won 2 battles back to back over at MPC.

Anyway !!!!!!!!!!! on to the fun side of things, I'm going back into my cave, to master a new Force technique to chop this shit!!
Welldone Fingerz very deserved win.

Has anyone else thought about the fact that if you win one of these you cant really win another, due to the mix tape, if ya get what I is meaning.

Haha! Indeed, if your creative you can work with anything. I'm not bitching about the sample choices, I think they were good picks. But there is a difference when we talk about the "rawness" of analog audio versus distortion due to digital compression. I'd imagine even that Fisher Price turntable reproduces audio at a higher fidelity than a 64kbps mp3. Also the SP-1200, being at 12-bit mono wav, 26khz, should have recorded and played back at a bitrate of about 312kbps, which is still higher than a medium quality mp3. An mp3 is a lossy format, the lower the bitrate the more detail in frequency range is lost, mostly in the high end, and you can't recover that. You can tweak it, but your really just working with what's left in the sound. Most of us can't tell because we're listening to music through headphones, computer speakers, car stereos, and such. I wasn't a believer until I heard a 128kbps mp3 through a 50,000 watt sound system and it sounds like you put your speakers in a sealed 55 gallon drum and poked some holes in the top. It's ironic because most of us that use software are running programs that are capable of processing 24-bit wav, 96khz, at bitrates of 4,608kbps and we are throwing 64kbps at it. Bitrate is the total amount of data used in ever second of digital audio. A good comparsion would be if you were watching a movie that only had 1 frame per second it wouldn't show much detail, but if it had 1,000 frames per second it would be much more fluid. Anyways, fellas. On with the chopping. ;)

Yeah, I'll admit it's kinda confusing. You can lower your bit depth (i.e. 8, 12, 16, 24-bit) while still at a higher bitrate and retain a gritty, raw sound. But once you lower the bitrate (kbps), your really just losing characteristics of detail in the sound. (Because digital audio isn't an accurate representation of sound, it's in the form of square waves. Analog audio is accurate, but affected by the quality and conditions of recording and playback devices, in the form of sine waves.) So, vinyl pops and crackles even sound better, like they are dancing, whereas at a low bitrate they may sound like static coming from a loose patch cable.

yeah, i feel what you're saying. i typically mangle the shit out of my samples though, so sound quality is almost irrelevant most of the time unless i'm pulling a straight-up loop. that's all i'm saying, there definitely are workarounds for literally any sample-- even those terrible watery ones from Youtube vids pre-2009.

oh, and on a sidenote...can one of the mods go through and do a quick sweep of the 1-2 spam tracks that are on the group page?
i think i only saw 1, but you never know.

See told you he knew his bizzle ha ha!! ;)

haha, i got nothing but love for Hungryman, me and him started coming up around the same time on these threads before i started sitting these battles out due to my carpal tunnel. but i almost like the challenge of having to flip a shitty lo-fi sample, it forces you to be even more creative than usual with a HQ sample.

You MUST vote to win!!

Use Crazy Colors and Fonts.

Only vote once.

Don't vote for yourself.

If you win this round I will reach out to you with the list of available DOOM acapellas that you can pick from. If you want to make any changes to the rules for the next battle you are definitely entitled to do that as well as pick the week's sample.

Good luck everyone!
