idk, i didn't think that girl deserved as much flak as she got for this...i mean, it's not like she did it on purpose. i guess we can fault her for being stupid, but are we really surprised that teenagers today don't give two shits about world history?
sure, the Holocaust was bad. nobody's arguing that...but i don't think this amount of outrage is necessary. you know how many people take selfies at the Colosseum in Rome or Fort Sumter in South Carolina or the entire cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki? give any tragedy enough time and the pain associated with it sorta just fades away-- as hard as that may be to hear for someone who has a personal relation to any particular event. we still have people living today who lived through these things, so the sting is much more up front to us than it will be to the generation after or the one after that. we've all (generally) accepted at this point that WWII jokes are okay, so why should this be treated any different?
if you break it down far enough, you're just left with the non-story of a naive teenager taking a picture of herself somewhere...we're ignoring that context but at the same time highlighting the secondary context of where she happens to be. idk, to me it just seems like a faux pas that her friends could've easily just had a good laugh over and then moved onto something else, it did not need the attention it received from the piece-of-shit instigators we call the national media. if anything, it just proves how reactionary and hypersensitive we've become as a society thanks to social media and a 24-hour news cycle constantly reaching for content...this is what happens when we've run out of real news to report, lol.
