Saw Gibbs at a Madlib x DOOM show in London, personally I think he fucking sucks, it has to be the Madlib production that's the appeal, because without he's another drug slangin', gun bussin' generic gangsta rapper.

Only prob I have with him. Not sure how Gibbs is better than any other typical worldstarhiphop rapper

i'd say because he can actually rap pretty well. i like gibbs, i understand why people would think he's generic though, and it's hard to argue against that.

I too went to that show in London. He sure knows how to get the crowd hyped. I've copped Thuggin, Shame and the Adult swim 7" purely for the libs killer instrumentals. I don't mind gibbs as a rapper, he just doesn't stand out from the crowd lyrically. and his lyrics don't really appeal to me that much.

Freddie Gibbs' appeal isn't about his lyrics or subject matter. It's all about the combination of his cadence, versatility and his voice. Once I got past what he was saying and started listening to his technical abilities I was pretty impressed. I do not enjoy the subject matter though as I find it hard to relate.

Surprised no one mentioned anything about Freddie's debut studio album dropping a few months ago...

I just hate that he releases his full lengths, this and BFK, on iTunes exclusively. I don't like the compressed files and really don't understand how he hasn't released a CD or record version of anything since Str8 Killa and Cold Day In Hell. Just always feels awkward buying albums from iTunes.

Freddie with out Madlib is lame balls, gangster, trash. With Madlib he is the next reincarnate of Raekwon, circa 94. Together they heat.

THANK YOU BASEDGOD!!!

This man knows what he is talking about. And anyone who has ever seen Gangsta Gibbs rock a show knows that this is the truth. Freddie's technical abilities as a rapper are motherfucking astonishing.

So you can't relate to the gangster images and this and that? Seriously STFU with all that garbage and take it for what it is...Gangster Rap. Gangster Rap is supposed to be about Gangster ass subjects. What the fuck do you expect him to rap about any way? Puppy dogs and rainbows?

Are we not allowed to think he's not all that great technically? There are a lot of gangster rappers who talk about "gangster ass subjects" that are better than Freddie. Without Madlib production any of the currently released tracks from the EPs would not have received 90% of the attention they have gotten imo.

I'm a big fan of Gibbs. ESGN was awesome. The entire album is really fun to listen to and that dude who yells like Luke Skyywalker is fantastic. One of the best rap records of the year, in my opinion. It's just solid all around.

And to those who don't find Freddie Gibbs impressive, how can you deny the beauty of his verse on Scottie Pippens?

No you're not. Have you seen him live? Didn't think so. Go to his show then tell me he isn't technically skilled as an MC.

Is this really that impressive? (Just a random search on Youtube, maybe there are better performances?)
Maybe it's just a "you have to be there in person" type thing, dunno.

If the above is considered impressive though, bar seems pretty low lol

I was at that show. The crowd fucking sucked balls, everyone just stood there like 'When is Quasimoto coming out?' Gibbs cussed out the crowd bounced then The Madlib cut the show short because those fuckers didn't deserve what they were getting.

So yeah, you need to be there. But you already have a chip on your shoulder with regards to Gangster Rap so I'm not going to try to convince you of anything. Seriously though, the whole 'his subject matter is played out' comments are themselves quite played out at this point. If you're not feeling him just ignore him, there's no point in constantly saying the same shit like a broken record.

It's simple and plain that Gibbs is seriously gifted with the word play. If you don't recognize that you simply aren't respecting/acknowledging (consciously or unconsciously) the craft and skill that it takes to put words together the way he's been doing it. Literally speaking it's about the way he builds rhythms through intricate pairing of words and syllables in compliment to the beat. What makes a guy like Gibbs standout in the pack is that he's able to do that and often times tell a story... or just paint some serious gangster landscapes. ...if you don't care for his particular style, imagery, aesthetic, subject matter well that's just subjective and pointless to argue against somebody who does. i.e. You might like the Hendrix more than Clapton, or viseversa, but you have to acknowledge that they can both play the god damn guitar. And even if you don't like one at all but love the other, you're still can't go and say the one you don't like can't play. Gibbs = exceptional mic skills.

Usually depends on how many ST artists roll through Denver in a given year, but I'm guaranteed to be at every one when they do roll up. I've flown to Houston and NYC for the sole purpose of going to a couple of The Madlib's gigs, was lucky enough to meet him both times as well.

Gangster gibbs.........flow is otherworldly. Saying dude is trash without madlib is seriously uninformed. Listen to Cold Day in Hell like 3 times It'll start making sense.
