the fact that freddie gibbs is a gangsta rapper and chose to think outside of the box and rap on some beats that were a bit different is refreshing and doing so brings something new to the table of "gangsta rap"

Aiyo this shit is classic! Never understood the hate towards fifty....

Honestly, I wasn't really a fan when he was huge in the 2000's, but looking back, Guess Who's Back/Get Rich or Die Trying are personal classics. I've always wanted to do a 50 cent remix tape.

Props to him for that, it did take Lambo to convince him it was worth doing stuff on these beats vs FG wanting to use them for intros/interludes/etc from what I've read somewhere (I think this is right??) anyway . There are a lot of people who can't rap on Madlib beats all that well (see most of the features on this record as I mentioned earlier) so I do see that point. The individual track "Thuggin" just didn't bring anything new I guess was my thought, the album as a whole definitely brought it.

GC90 you miss the point again, and again, and again...  step off FG if you can't hear him by now.

as jonwayne said, "if you can't see [Fred] musically / then pay no attention"

Took a few mins to find, I believe this was the article I was thinking of (thought it was a different site/article though) - http://www.hiphopdx....-other-s-music/

Dunno what you mean out of pocket, I imagine it was funded the same way Madlib/FG's other projects have been funded.

Thanks for that link GC90, very nice read.

On another note, I'm sure that at some point Egon hinted that the Instrumentals would have some kind of bonus/extra beats - does anyone else remember this or is my memory playing tricks on me? If someone can find the link I'm sure we could start a class action suit.

I guess it didn't turn out that way in the end anyway, though I haven't heard the beats lp yet as I'm still waiting for RK2 to come out so I can hopefully combine shipping on the two.

Yeah, I remember Egon saying that The Madlib and Corleone scrimped and saved for the past couple years to fund this project themselves.

Haha I thought you meant a literal Lamborghini! Either way it's pretty cool that he even considered rapping over something a bit weird/underground compared to average gangsta rap beats imo.

Yeah, I remember Egon saying that The Madlib and Corleone scrimped and saved for the past couple years to fund this project themselves.

Yeah, this is what I was referring to. I think Egon posted it on an Instagram pic when the album dropped or something.

Maybe that was in reference to the Bonus Beats on the EPs?

As far as the music video thing: I do wish that they would've taken a more of creative approach to it all, though I remember being stoked on the "Thuggin'" video when it came out. The ones following seemed to drag a bit. Maybe since the little "series" is over we can see another style of direction?

Maybe that was in reference to the Bonus Beats on the EPs?

I'm fairly sure that wasn't the case, as i remember thinking (and maybe posting here) that if the extras on the instros LP turned out to be just the bonus beats from the EPs then it'd be a bit lame (at least for those who supported by buying the EPs).

Anyway it's no big deal, just a little disappointing I suppose.

Ah yeah lol, it didn't take a Lamborghini to convince him to rap on Madlib beats

Wasn't aware of that, any guess on whether this is the case for most of the records Madlib puts out (maybe now since doing Rappcats?) or was it just the concept of album that made them need to do this

I wonder how much Madlib charged Fred for these beats, how do they split the money? does the rapper get the most money from sales or the producer?.... ive always wanted to understand how the business side of albums like this work.

Picked up the Piñata Beats CD while I wait on the vinyl. Rad packaging. If DJ Primate had made that mock-up sooner it would probably be in the booklet!

Unless FG had a super specific vision of how these videos should be, it was likely some white dude (director/etc) who was making these video concepts up. Basically white privileged kid shooting video of what he thinks is hood/thuggin, I'd argue is similar to a minstrel show (but instead of white people in black face they got FG to star in it lol). This is true of a bunch of rap videos in general, but to see Madlib's name thrown on top of that is a bummer.

I emailed him myself with this quote since your lazy ass probably wouldn't.  He replied:

"Yes I am white. No I am not privileged. All of that stuff is right there in the lyrics. I didn't have to make much up. There's no fantasy aspect to it. I try to portray everything as realistically as possible from a neutral perspective."

haha

dude's just trying to bring no ideas to the table, that's all.

In my opinion, the music and rhymes are a little more nuanced than the vids, and another angle might have added some depth to the visuals instead of "oh, he's talking about gangsta shit, so... well here's some guns."

But maybe it's just that I prefer vids that tell stories visually, thus adding another layer to the experience, rather than just being dudes walking around a busted apartment complex racking shotguns and bagging blow. I did like this last one, and it had a beginning middle and end. you should have asked him what he shot these on, the crispness of the videos is one of their strongest selling points!
