Same record used for Black Widow. Definitely a keeper.

How did he clear the xxxxxxxxxxxxx samples?!

After seeing the MMS mixes being sold without any prob I don't think they are clearing much these days (besides maybe for bigger projects like Pinata?). Fortunately Madlib's not big enough to be on a lot of those radars I guess but I could be wrong lol

Stop calling out samples on message boards and WhoSampled and the likelihood of The Madlib being sued dwindles. I'm pretty sure he said as much in that Benji B interview a few months back.

(This is just a general statement and not directed at anyone in particular.)

The Madlib quote:

"I can't really tell you the sample, because then I'll be up in court. I've been getting sued so much lately from these little computer people, that put all the information up on the internet... It's kinda killin' the game. Coulda put out way more albums but... I'm getting popped for samples."

COULDA PUT OUT WAY MORE ALBUMS BUT...

It's a bummer because finding out info about samples has lead me to listening to a whole bunch of stuff I probably wouldn't have checked out or just wouldn't have known about if it wasn't for that info. Can def see where Madlib, other producers are coming from though with not wanting people to know/share. Lawyers/Music Industry have to try and ruin anything basically :(

uncleared samples are definitely an ethical balancing act. i'd rather have more madlib music than have incredibly easy to find samples. There are ways to search without having to directly tie madlib and an obscure artist together for any google search to uncover.

This just my perspective:

Digging is a skill/art within itself. It has taken me over 12 years of dusty fingers to find some pretty amazing records but personally there is no better feeling than coping some wax and bringing it home only to discover upon first listen that 'So&So' artist flipped the same record on my platter. I understand that The Madlib and other sample based musicians help people discover obscure shit but I recommend doing what those artists do when you go crate digging; be adventurous with your selections. Talk to the old head behind the counter at the record spot and ask him what labels, titles, musicians you should be keeping an eye out for. Eventually you'll get to the point where you can identify hot shit in a matter of seconds/minutes. I'm not saying everyone should quit using google as a crutch I'm just talking from my own experience.

This describes it perfectly for me lol, after hearing MMS 2 I was obsessed with finding all these tracks/records. Def agree with what Sunny said though, always exciting to pick up random records and find some samples on it (especially on dollar bin stuff!)

One thing I love about the madlib invasion packaging is that while sampled names are left blank, the culture/scene of the music he samples get recognition. Lovin the movie/comic culture of the RK and Bk Africa CD packaging.

"The Madlib" originated from a Bot typo.

When Blu posted that album UCLA without madlib authorization, STBOT explained that "the madlib had it removed".

Though quickly corrected, the boards could never be the same.

I knew I'd heard Deeper before! I always thought it was a BK5&6 beat though.

I would really appreciate if someone could send me a message with the name of the movie (or show) where the "well, you know, there's plenty on the road" snippet came from! I've searched high and low and can not find it!

"How was it dolly baby?"

"get that stupid groupie outta there and let's hit the road"

Please!~

After the discussion on samples I came across the 10 best sample flips by jake one. I thought it was funny what he said about calling out samples.

"I did some stuff like that on my album and I got sued. Over dumb shit. Not over even anything that was important. Little dumb shit like that I put in there I got in trouble for. That shit kills you. I got sued for like four different things. And it’s all the Internet. You have these websites – whosampled and the-breaks. And people are just into the music, so they’re hyped about finding samples. But all these artists have a Google alert which is leading them to the treasure chest. That’s all people are doing when you do that on line. At least misspell the name or some shit.".

Here is the link. http://www.egotripla...e-sample-flips/

I really like reading these. Cool to see what others say of their peers or the producers that came before them/they look up to. Good reads.
