hey guys,
this thread is reserved for whiny little kids like Necedah, who want to use these boards specifically to (ironically) call us all out and tell us we're fags for liking J Dilla.

well, here's your platform guy- now spout off and enlighten all of us about what "real music" is to you.
douche.

Regardless of Lee Hazlewood being one of the best singers of all time, You just don't flip his shit, Because it won't fit the right context of what hip hop, or this retarded glitch hop scene would fit with.. I don't care how abstract you get. And the japanese pop nonsense has drums throughout the whole thing which are WAAAAY too high in BPM to chop unless you made some fucking dungeon -16 time stretch shit with lame trap hi hats that so many morons do with everything, that already sounds the same. Stupid. I don't participate in this contest 98% of the time because you guys are TERRIBLE at choosing samples. There have been a FEW decent samples chosen in here. And usually the shit I find the least entertaining wins because you retards are appealed to tacky BS flying lotus or j dilla would make.

I've done this contest twice in my life. I have no interest in "competition" i'm not in a dog show or a football player. Especially when the beat contest is a bias popularity contest will with 16-18 retards and idiots from LA who's lives were all "Saved" by J Dilla, and the second or third following of this subpar brainfeeder-esque style of wonky beats

It's not new to me that heads can't accept Criticism or COMMON logic. What a bunch of sour pusses.. Sorry my words haven't ENCOURAGED you to do something DIFFERENT.

"John wayne has never made a classic. AND track 4 is some **** you would have heard on soundclick in 2004 for 15 dollars that would never sell"

he's just an all-around bundle of optimistic joy, as you can clearly tell...he should do a talk show, where he takes calls and gives inspirational speeches to audience members.

I... can't disagree with this.

While his delivery might be a little harsh, I agree with the dude on some aspects. A big reason I've skipped out on the last 250+ beat battles is because there's rarely any variety to any of it. The samples are cool sometimes and everyone does their best Dilla/Madlib/Lotus/Premo impression when they flip them. Someone wins and the cycle repeats. It's not as fun anymore.

The beat battles are also huge now, too. I had more fun when the battles first started, and I didn't have to swim through a sea of mediocre beats to vote.

lol at "John wayne" though

its almost impossible to NOT draw comparisons to other producers now though. if you put a phaser on some ride cymbals, people are gonna say youre on some flylo shit. the problem with hip hop and most pop music genres is its hard to be innovative and still sound like hip hop. of course a dilla rip off beat is going to win a beat battle, because dillas style is doper than some bedroom producer's wacky outer space bullshit attempt and avantgarde hip hop.

Yeah primate, the battles were more fun when there was only like twenty beats. That's for sure. I pretty much stopped battling after 200. I thought it was cool that stones throw gave that battle front page news, but it ended up for the worst. It's freaking impossible to keep up with 120 beats a week, plus personal projects, school, work, social life.....i don't have the time to battle anymore. But still, this dude was out of line. Straight shitting on a hundred beat makers to their face?

Primate has some good points, and I agree to an extent. now if only the dude Necedah was as eloquent as that in stating his issues, then i'm sure the boards wouldn't have acted so harshly towards him. this is a big community, and everyone has a diff take on the world- that's granted. but while some dudes will completely bite another dude's style...it's not like that hasn't been done before. in fact, it's pretty common in all forms of art for people to start out by imitating someone else before establishing their own style. Van Gogh started out by copying Bouguereau paintings at an art museum, and Madlib has said that his biggest influences growing up were dudes like Pete and Scott La Rock- hell, even Dilla inspired him on everything he's done post-Jaylib.

the truth is, a lot of us dudes on the beat battles are still on the come-up, and not as cynical or jaded to the idea of battling as, say, someone who's been with it since week 1...so most of us are still in varying stages of development- if we weren't, we wouldn't be reaching out to the community to hear our shit every week. some of it's good, some whack- but the point of it is to brush up all of our skills so that we can eventually spawn new styles (which i'll admit has gotten a lot harder nowadays where you can hear every emerging genre in the world at the click of a mouse). i've heard a few- and yeah, sadly it's only a select few- producers on the BB's churn up some pretty original shit...but even then, it's all relative since everything's been influenced by something.

I agree. That's why I don't do it anymore. I created one-on-ones and even made the most unique beat in one battle sometime around #30-50 (used a theramin and trash bags for drum samples) out of all the contestants and nobody cared, they wanted that FlyLo/Dilla stuff. No hate, no animosity, just not the venue to showcase, especially not anymore.

Still love Stonesthrow.

because the theremin is a ugly instrument that only weirdo autists play and even if you sampled a hydrogen atom bonding to a nitrogen atom to make your kick drum who gives a fuck? if it doesnt sound good youre not going to win.

This right here.

If you climbed all the way to the top of everest and snatched up a rock from the summit, got a ring made out of it, and gave it to your girl, she's still going to think you're wack cause it looks like a river rock.

All "sounding like dilla or flylo" means is that you understand what is currently popular in this community. True originality is likely impossible. One can either build on top of the popular monument of their choosing (dilla or flylo or doom, whoever), choose a lesser known monument to build on top of, or work your way from the trenches to general and have people trying to build on top of you. There's only 3 or 4 big guys at a time for a reason, if there were any more, they would be normal dudes.

You know, one of the problems is that anybody wanting to do some experimental jazz-hip hop-bass experiments instantly gets billed "flylo rip off". Shlohmo didn't invent shit by the way. Can't we accept at some point that flylo opened a new door in hip hop? A new side genre that maybe a few others can dabble in without being style biters? Also, seems like a fool can't use snappy drums anymore without being a "Dilla biter". I think that Dilla was the Motown biter

well, i'd agree with you there as far as genres go...but stylistically, i disagree Grifty. while it's been around long before, you have to admit that not too many dudes were incorporating found sounds, vocal chops pitched wayyyyy down or weird time sigs before he showed up with Bad Vibes. i don't wanna point anyone out and blow up their spot, but i've heard several people even on the BB's who totally bite his style almost every week lol...which like i said before, is okay for a developing artist trying to find their own sound. the only time it starts getting annoying is when they never evolve, and choose to just stay content with biting another dude's style throughout their entire careers.

i think it's really hard to not sound like Dilla or Flying Lotus (or even Madlib in this case), because of the sheer amount of versatility each dude has/had within their respective careers.

i obviously am not comparing Shlohmo to Dilla, but i'm definitely hearing a huge resurgence of downtempo, trap-based wonky beats that are clearly modeled after people like him and Clams Casino and (to an extent) even Daisuke Tanabe...you can't deny that lol.

the Harlem Shake is a perfect example of how popular that style has become to bedroom producers in the same boat as us. it's not as pertinent as Dilla-clones, but it's still out there...that's why i'm going to just record dogs barking and me taking a shit in a really echo-y room from now on, and just loop that until people catch on and say that i'm doing something new. then they won't be able to say i'm a biter ;)

Exactly, we all gotta start with an inspiration whether it be Flylo or Dilla, Humans learn through immitation from the time we're born to the time we die, so in our music there maybe some aspects that sound like Dilla or Flylo or whoever inspires you, but with that we add our own sounds that represents us. It is almost impossible to be original now a days.

You're a pretty negative guy. THAT is why I don't partake. No love for somebody doing something different, which is fine, because I share the Joaquin Phoenix mentality. Your approval or recognition or awards are just carrots.
