Went diggin' in the 45 boxes today. Brought my Numark portable turntable and listened to everything that I've never heard of before. Had to hear a lot of crap. But found some gems.

I like sampling off 45s because you can really slow them down and disect every little bleep, tick, and pluck off the record.

Then I run them through the sampler and record onto tape. I got a cassette deck with pitch and speed control so I can get that warble sound I so love.

I really need to get a portable turntable for digging...would help me avoid these DUD albums that I pick up occasionally.

Dude that runs it doesn't have the time to do it anymore.  He got a job with discogs. 360 is a 5 minute walk from where I work, many lunches have been spent digging through records, gonna be sad to see the doors closed.

What a shame. From what I've heard they have a great hip hop selection. Always sad to see another shop close their doors.

Their hip hop selection is by far the best I've ever seen.  On top of that, all the non hip hop records have stickers on the outer sleeves with listings of known samples on the records.  Staff is insanely knowledgable too, and are always bumping The Madlib in the store.  Little slice of paradise.

and so it goes... internet sellers can get similar prices for their records as record stores, without the overhead. Hard to justify the cost of a retail shop

Don't want to say too much or appear like I'm speaking for him, but just wanted to say the decision to close was based on a lot of things but not because he couldn't afford to be open or because of any bad business decisions etc. Only saying this since there are a lot of stories about record shops closing out there where it is really due to poor business based on expensive rent (sometimes owner's fault for renting in too expensive part of town/etc) or just because of basic ignorance/incompetence of running a business. The dude running 360 Vinyl is definitely not closing for either of those reasons anyway, he's definitely a smart dude.

Sad to see the shop go though, like orchid said he has always had an amazing hip hop selection and def had solid stock of other genres too. I haven't visited too many other shops in Portland simply because 360 is going to have what I want to buy.

You'd be a savior for Portland hip hop heads. Call them up today if you serious, I was actually considering it myself but don't have the nads. I'd literally work minimum wage in store credit as a helper though. I know this is just talk but it would be crazy badass

Retail shops in the music biz these days need to diversify their offerings. Music alone won't support a shop any more. Sad truth.

Not necessarily, I actually hate going into 'record shops' that are full of little trinkets, toys, snacks and other crap from floor to ceiling. There's one next to my house that sells a ridiculous amount of crap that I will guarantee doesn't get sold very often. The best shop in Denver is called Wax Trax and they don't sell any of that bullshit; strictly music and they've been going strong for decades now. noz from cocaineblunts actually wrote an awesome piece a few years ago talking about this exact subject, I'll see if I can find it. My issue with all the bs from a business standpoint is that increases your overhead drastically and also making inventory that much more difficult to control. I understand not everywhere has such a strong scene as my city but there are other shops throughout the country that don't find the need to sell KidRobot figurines and a bunch of other crap; plus those stores always sell those items for a lot more than you would find them at a specialty store that caters to that specfic market. It's all about trying to get people to impulse buy shit they had no reason to cop in the first place.

I hear you...Just meant that crate digging is a pretty specialized niche market. Stores that diversify their offerings bring in a wider client base.
