You know what this is. If you don't, you may want to check the pre-requisites for signing up to this board.

Talk about stories of Dilla, post beats, speculation, all that good stuff. RIP to the God.

I'm going to start off with two postings:

1.The first is an interview I did with ?uestlove over the phone back when The Roots' Game Theory album was dropping. I didn't have much interview experience at that point. I had a strict time limit and knew I had to ask about the album but really I was getting that out of the way to ask for a Dilla story.

The story he tells is the making of the Beat for Common's Dooinit. Enjoy.

[Dilla anecdote starts around 7:15]

EDIT: Here's the hyperlink as I keep seeing it show up as "track currently unavailable". http://soundcloud.co...e-interview-cut

2. Second is a rare SV track they did for Jazzy Jeff produced by Dilla. One of if not my favorite all-time Slum Village song. This is my go-to 100% time while pre-gaming before going out for a night on the town. It was very hard to find prior to being released on the BBE 15 years collection.

I will never forget where I was the first time I heard Labcabin by The Pharcyde. Or when I first picked up Like Water for Chocolate. And of course I'll always remember sitting in the computer lab at my community college and staring blankly at the screen for damn near five minutes when I first read that Dilla Dawg had passed. One of my favorite Jay Dee memories has to be when my best friend Branden, RIP, had moved back out to Denver from Compton and was living with me for a minute. I would come home from work and my Donuts LP would be laying on one side of the room with both vinyls on the turntables and Branden just vibing the fuck out almost everyday to that album. My copy is literally beat to shit now but everytime I look at it all I can think of is my homie bumping One Eleven over and over again.

There's not much to say, really. The music speaks for itself. Anyone who listened to more than 3 Dilla beats know what's up. He had so many styles and ways of flipping some ill samples and make something beautiful out of it. He created so many different styles of music...some serious bangers, the most chill & relaxing stuff, some very emotional music.

yo goodz, i honestly cant stop bumpin that "30 rare beats" video, i only have some of those beats from the "3 beat tapes" and "mpc 3000" if you dont mind hookin it up with some other beat tapes, PM me my manz.... i would also love to have the unreleased madlib beats, i only have the 62 beats feburary.. but thats off topic i aint greedy, please share the dilla beats lol

What im really looking foward to though, since im 20 and turn 21 later this year so i cant go to any dilla shows, is what documentary they come out with this year. The stussy one was dope and had very good insight on how he worked, and the one they released last year were they show him goin to radioshack and the show was too ill.... what will this year have in store for us??

Dilla's "Jay Stay Paid" LP put me onto Danny Brown, so I'm thankful. Dude's flow and rhymes were crazy on "Hybrid VS Dilla Bot". After that I checked on Danny Brown and I am glad he's getting the shine he deserves.

If I wasn't so lazy, I'd put together the LP Guilty Simpson & Dilla had produced. I think most, if not all, tracks have been released. Can someone post the supposed tracklist? I guess you could just check on all Dilla produced Simpson tracks, but still

Dilla freestyle posted by Wajeed yesterday...

Here's the story:

I got this one on a cassette from T3 circa 1997. I’m not sure what it was for, or why Dilla had this on tape, but I thought it was hilarious. “Shut the Fuck Up and listen to this… this.” This kind of style was typical for our crew at this time – we were just finishing up the Fantastic Vol 1 album. It was never about what they said – but instead how they said it. We called it “R.A.W.” – Rugged And wild. And that is exactly what this one is – tape hiss and all.
Enjoy

This is the same way I found out about Danny Brown as well.

My favorite thing about J Dilla's production is how EASY it sounds to the untrained ear, and how intricate it is to the seasoned one. Most of us are beatmakers in here so we all know how many imitations there are out there, we'd be lying to ourselves if we said alot of those cats arent in STBB. He somehow managed to make what were sometimes straight genius, visionary sample flips into simple, relatable music. I think this is why so many people have caught on to his legacy. Its like there are various factions of Dilla fans who all listen to his music in a different way, and that is always what has captivated me.

As for my point in the first sentence, alot of cats related so much to his beats that one day they just straight said "I'm going to make music that sounds like this, and im going to study Dilla production as a science". Since then, an ENTIRE GENRE of instrumental production has formed, and I'd argue that 97% of cats STILL dont even know the HALF when it comes to the technique that was actually in Jay Dee's head. From the drum techniques, simple stuff like swing, more intricate mixdown stuff like chaining, MPC techniques....all stuff that folks think they know about him. He was nowhere near the top of his game when he passed, so he might have been even more visionary than we give credit for (and we give him the most credit of any beatmaker, so thats all the more notable). So whenever I hear cats making Dilla tributes, biting, showing love, being influenced, whatever, its all love--thats how we continue his musical legacy...but i also smile, nod, and just say "nice, but you truly have no idea". and neither do I!
