Don't see any discussions on comedians too much around here, which brings me to ask who you guys watch/listen to?

Just picked up Norm Macdonald's new album, a couple Eugene Mirman albums, and Mike Birbiglia's book and its all pretty solid stuff. I don't know about you guys, but I just can't get into what everyone is pushing as the "hot new" comedians. Like Donald Glover, the Workaholics, the guy that plays Taco on the League (don't see how he's getting push, but whatever). Idk, maybe I'm just not getting it.

But what about you guys? Any favorites? Anybody you can't stand? I'm curious.

Norm McDonald is absolutely hilarious. Jake Johannsen (sp? on the last name) is one of my favorites. Also, I saw some of Dave Chappelle's standup for the first time the other night. I had watched the Chapelle show a bunch of times before and never really liked it but I thought his standup was great; it was the one where he talked about him and his friend Chip gettin high and talkin to cops.

I Just started watching old Chappelle Show rerun's. That nigga is funny. I am not sure you can call Conan and Andy comedians but I find them funny. Don't really know any by name, but there are some good ones out there.

LOUIS

Can't believe I left him out. Fail. The comedy gods deserve to strike me down for that one. I've been all about that dude since (it wasn't too long ago) that HBO special he did with the "suck a bag of dicks" bit. The man is genius.

I'm honestly surprised about the Jake Johannsen comment. Hilarious, but I was convinced no one else on the planet (at least that I've talked to) knew about him lol. I forgot all about him to tell the truth, so thanks for reminding me.

And I agree with mangoe and skate, it doesn't matter if you weren't a fan of the show or not, his standup was top notch. The Elizabeth Smart bit is classic.

What about classic comedians? Anyone here a fan of Steve Martin's standup? Personally, I think he's the best of all time. Timeless.

Katt Williams, Demetri Martin, Nick Swardson, Dave Attell, Kevin Hart.

As far as GOAT is concerned, no one can touch George Carlin and Richard Pryor.

.....and on another note, why the fuck is Last Comic Standing not available on DVD?

Right? I just saw Ralphie May recently (who KILLED with a 15 minute bit on blowjobs) and it made me pine for at least season 1. Dave Mordal and Rich Vos together in the house was a match made in comedy heaven.

I did so, on that recommendation (it was on netflix). I've never really known too much about him to begin with, but I'm gonna start tracking down some more of his material definitely. Glad I watched it, good look.

No love for women comedians anyone? Or is it generally agreed upon, sadly, that most of them are pretty weak? Kathleen Madigan and Sarah Silverman were always solid I thought. And Tina Fay (for her writing, not sure she does stand up). But thats pretty much it.

Lisa Lampinelli kills on Roasts, but her standup is weak. Whitney Cummings is pretty good.

I forget who said it, but as to why there are not many great female comedians: "women never needed to be funny in order to get laid."

as far as female comedians, morgan murphy is my personal favorite. i like sarah silverman a lot be she gets tons of heat (probably because she's the one female comedian that everyone knows). also, can't forget maria bamford, she's fucking hysterical.

i tend to like nerdier/social commentary stuff; so patton oswalt, brian posehn, david cross, chappelle, hicks. stuff like that. i prefer hannibal buress over donald glover, they're both great in their own ways though.

i've been revisiting a lot of Otto Petersen's work now that he's been dead for a month or two, and i've gotta say the guy really was incredible...

his act was so creative and unique that it surpassed just being funny and became almost a brilliant piece of performance art (for those who don't know, Otto and George was a long-running stand-up act that included Otto and his vulgar puppet George; he was never as successful as some other comedians, but he would usually show up on those comedians' lists of all-time favorites)

also, Patrice O'Neal, dumb ol' Rich Vos, Jimmy Norton, Billy Burr, Fat Bob Kelly, Kurt Metzger, Dan Soder....oh yeah, and of course Louis CK.

yes on all of those except Demetri Martin...i don't really think he's that funny, his brand of humor is not my cup of tea.  i respect Steven Wright, but i don't think i'd pay to go see him.

oh, there's also Nick DiPaulo, Joe Rogan, Joey Diaz, Neal Brennan, Artie Lange, Rich Vos, Dave Attell...the list goes on and on.

Most of the comedians I like have been mentioned. Mitch Hedberg is probably my all time favorite. And Jim Gaffigan is right up there. Saw him live a couple years ago, it was very funny. Steven Wright is great too.
