i had downloaded "ATHF" off of Danger DOOM after watching the music video back in '05, before i even realized who DOOM was.  i had always known that one track, and knew his voice from that song and that giraffe he played on Perfect Hair Forever, 5 whole years before i was smart enough to put two and two together and realize that Madvillainy was a thing that existed...so i've always had a weird relationship with that DD album.

As for the Danger Mouse collab, I'd like to hear more like 'November Has Come' from Demon Days. DOOM's voice fit so nicely over that beat it was a perfect collabo.

Yeah, another Danger Mouse/DOOM collaboration without any AS stuff would be awesome. Also random note, November Has Come was my intro to DOOM>Madlib>Stones Throw, etc

Yeah that's what I've always seen and heard whenever I tell people I dig that record. Still don't know why people dislike that record so much. One person I talked to was all pissy and saying that's when Doom "sold out" etc

MF Grimm also did that one track against Doom because of the MIC reference on Danger Doom

I find it hard to bag the album after hearing MF DOOM go the fuck in on Bada Bing.

Bada Bing is maybe the hardest cut on the album. Or Crosshairs.

And the skits, well honestly you had to be in this real specific window of the venn diagram I think, of being a fan of adult swim circa 2001-2005, and also being a DOOM fan at the time, for that stuff to resonate. Looking back it's not gonna age well for people outside that window. I mean what does Brak even mean or stand for anymore? nothing. But if you watched Spaceghost or ATHF or Harvey Birdman back then, it's a weird little time capsule. And El Chupa Nibre is a futurama reference, and yet there's no futurama samples. but there's that little clip of lois from family guy saying go fuck yourself. odd.

We were describing our reactions to his records: 1. OPERATION DOOMSDAY is precious like mercury.  MMFOOD-Out of this galaxy.

DOOOOMMMMMMMMM!

The dude who started the DOOM is overrated thread is a troll.  Case closed.

Too many ill joints on there for me to have appreciated this one.  But, its simplicity is so dope.

tldr; I like the other songs better.

It is the sample of Dre saying hot shit and them using the sample with their verse that got me.

from Grimm's reddit AMA: "My MF stands for multiple things, first and foremost Manhattan's Finest, Multiple Frequencies, and MotherFucking Grimm ;)"

Though I've heard Mad Flows too. I'm pretty sure it's whatever he wants it to be at any given moment

I really don't know why Grimm decided to come at DOOM on that song.. I mean obviously because they had beef, Grimm has a fair bit of street cred and might think DOOM is a bit fake, but yeah I don't think Grimm can really step to DOOM as an MC.

Grimm's done some songs that I think are great but it's usually because of the beat or the theme of the song rather than him as an MC

Hey what happened to the whole GM Grimm thing anyway

Also is MV2 out yet

I read in some Madlib interview that he had beats already made for a Madvillain sequel. But he said something along the lines of getting word to DOOM to get some lyrics together.

I think that was like a couple years ago though. So don't know what came of it.

Don't know why they don't put out a second album. That would sell like hot cakes.

Did anyone at Stones Throw ever dangle some cash in front of DOOM as an advance on making a MV2?

I'm sure DOOM wants to make it. I know Madlib does.

Don't know what the hold up is.

EVERYONE is waiting to hear it. Every person on this board awaits a Madvillain sequel.

Maybe it's DOOM's perfectionism that hinders his motivation to make it.

unexpected guests = cashgrab = not worth your time. if you're a big fan anyway you'll probably already have most of the good joints off there.

Born Like This? masterpiece!!!

I think I bought Unexpected Guests and Born Like this at the same time, and I was so disappointed with UG, that I did not give BLT a chance. So far, it is pretty dope.

Viktor Vaughn is a master piece as well.

It took me a minute to wrap my head around Born Like This, but once you submerge fully in it it's work the wait. It's just different. Every time he puts out an album DOOM's like "oh, you want more of that awesome thing I was doing last time? well here's a totally different yet just as awesome thing." My only complaint at this point is that there are too many features. Yessir should have had a DOOM verse and Angelz's inclusion felt questionable at the time because it had been leaked years and years earlier.

So it still is an EP...

I feel like I watched them go back and forth on this on twitter, I guess they landed on just calling it an LP no matter what. Otherwise they couldn't make the claim that it's the "first full length LP since Take Me To Your Leader" produced entirely by Metal Fingers"

fuck, man...that was way nostalgic for me watching that again.  i remember buying the track on itunes and memorizing the lyrics, years and years before i'd ever discover who DOOM or Danger Mouse were...i just thought Danger DOOM was an actual group and not a one-off project for [as].  crazy though, i haven't watched that in like 9 years haha.

to say you were disappointed by Unexpected Guests sounds like you expected a good album. It's a comp of stuff you can play on youtube, released by Nature Sounds. It's bootleg level. They have the worst records, the worst covers. They just don't give a shit, like it's purely to make a buck. And how much money could they have made on this thing, a couple hundred dollars?

This is part of the reason Madvillainy looms to large to everyone who is into Doom -- because his subsequent releases have been "OK" at best. Even MM FOOD felt tacked together and full of filler. His stuff on Lex at least has nice packaging, but you don't even need nice packaging of the album is great ... and his last joint on Lex (JJ DOOM) was not great.

well I'm a little old school and I was in an actual music store, saw the DOOM covers and snatched um up based on the strength of Viktor V and Madvillian, so yeah, I expected too much. Same thing with that piece of shit Rebirth of Detroit money grab, crap album..

I like JJ DOOM. It's really grown on me. It's not 100%, but good enough for a thumbs up in my book.
