I have been a habitual smoker for almost 20 years now on and off. I stopped cold turkey about a week ago and I CANT SLEEP. I do sleep a little, but very light. I quit about a year ago, because I was looking for a new job and the insomnia lasted about a month. Anybody else deal with this? I picked it up again a couple months later. The main reason I stopped this time is because it just doesn't do for me what it used to. I am 33 years old and Instead of being enjoyable, it mostly makes me stupid, depressed, my job performance has suffered and it makes me over emotional. I used to love making and listening to music on it but now the negative effects out weigh the positive. Your thoughts.....

yup, I also did about 18yrs then just stopped.. Lack of sleep was a huge problem for the first month..

I solved the problem by drinking every night, not so much I'd have a hangover the next day, just enough to give me sleepy eyes... Only thing that worked for me. After three weeks I stopped the drinking and everything was fine, just gave my body time enough to revert to a normal chemical balance...

One year later and I'm still off it, I do miss her greatly though....

*edit - I stopped for the same reasons, it had become a hindrance in all aspects of life...

Try drinking tea that promotes relaxation and restfulness (with herbs like valerian, chamomile, hops, skullcap, lavender) near bedtime. What usually keeps me awake after the lights go out is a restless mind. Some form of meditation can help with that. Once you have adjusted to the absence of trees, you will feel a lot better.

Its only been a week and I feel so much better. I am 10x more sharp and my response time to questions is alot quicker... lol. I do drink wine but I have limited it to just the weekends recently. I am trying to better myself in general. Considering going to school too. And yes, the dreams are much more vivid.... when I do sleep that is.

Good job on giving it up and good luck to you man. Getting high is overrated and expensive.

I just talked to my cousin, he just quit after everyday hardcore for 3 years, he said he cant sleep either and has the shakes, tho i think he was joking about the shakes. What I do, stoned or sober is I always take 2 gravol an hour or 2 before bed. It makes me sleep like a baby. I have been doing that for about 7 months now and every night I have had a solid sleep, sober or not.

Nah, I'm good on that. That shit is habit forming. Trying to quit bad habits. I'll do it the natural way.

nice on the cold turkey. that shit is never easy. I stopped a couple of years back too for the same bullshit reasons. I don't get it, i just started acting differently on her. Shes one of those girls you see maybe every so often when you break up...and in small visits.

Gravol - too much will fuck you up.

Boomers - Fun, but state of mind must be chill. EDIT: he was talking about shrooms post. loool

Best bet would be to say fuck it all and make beats to fill that chemical imbalance. That space can always be filled with something more productive and rewarding. props.

That's strange. When I quit I forgot all about it. Slept like a baby. sounds like you need to do something to wear you out.

Replace sitting on the couch smoking with working out, or some kind of strenuous activity. Then you will sleep well.

I have an extremely physical job so I am def not lacking in exercise. I think its just because I'm getting a little older now and my body has depended on herb to assist with my sleeping for so long that it's taking my body longer to get back to normal.

My wife and I go through a quarter a week, much more than we used to. I really should cut back.

Every time I stop I get the "user dreams" really bad, all my dreams have something to do with me scoring a bag or getting high haha. <_<

reading books will either take your mind off wanting to smoke or make you sleepy.
if you're out of work, keep regular hours - try sticking to a brutal wake up routine and the rest will fall in place

Yeah but that's your normal activity. I'm saying you need to bump it up a notch. That's the only way.

Maybe you have insomnia. talk to a doctor

Good point.

I think the insomnia will stop. I once quit for 3 1/2 years from 01' to 05' and had no problems sleeping.

Yes, it does suck not smoking, but I feel great. I have so much more energy and my over all quality of life is much better. I think it was hindering me from a lot in my life.

I encourage any of you habitual smokers out there to try quitting for a week and see how your quality of life improves. Then go from there.

Yeah, I drink green tea every morning like clock work.

Used to drink coffee, but it has no nutritional value what so ever.

Yerba mate is really good too.
