Look for audio interface/soundcards with a few in/out puts (basically match the amount/type of ports with what you'd use with it), ASIO support (this helps lower the latency), USB2 (mac are phasing out firewire), MIDI ports and an onboard CPU. I'd recommend M-Audio FTU - i've got good support on their forum, tho I'm sure other brands have similar features/quality. If looking at older, second hand gear, make sure the card is Full Duplex (playback and record simultaneously) not half-duplex.
Some cards are geared more for recording instruments, Digital DJing or just general studio use. My card takes S/PDIF,1/4", Mic and XLR? (don't use that) and MIDI. I think it might have DSP fx on it but I don't use that either. Covers everything I need

i bought i lexicon lambda for home use to fuck with .its decent.24 bit good sound not that much money either.
