So I sometimes have trouble with my basslines and I was wondering what do you guys use for your bass? Do you use a bass vst? Or do you sample a tone from a song then tweak that? I'm just curious what you guys are doing because the stuff I hear from this site from you all is dope.

So this is going to sound completely amateur, but how do you do that? I use FL studio with my samples and I have no clue how to filter the samples. Also, do you have any EQ tips? Thanks man.

sorry i have never used FL studios so i wouldnt have a clue what you can can not do with it, my equing is done by ear, i use the apple 30 band eq in logic ( i used to use a better one(waves platinum) but it was a vst, but logic 8 only uses au plug ins so my old plug ins no longer work
Thanks man for the tips. What kind of filters do you use?

In Fl studio you can tweak any instrument a million different ways. you can open up a bass in sytrus and tweak it directly in fruity sytrus.
-add a new channel: sytrus
-open up a bass sound in sytrus
-you can tweak it right there in sytrus or
-assign the bass/sytrus channel to "insert1" on your mixer
- play a quick pattern
-while it plays go through your plugin menu in the presets in "insert1" on your mixer.
(there are many, so take your time)
-experiment and try everything
Tip: try adding a slight reverb to it. Or open up "chorus" in the "insert1" preset menu where your sytrus/bass is.
play with the chorus effects, messing with dials and envelopes is the quickest way to learn. Also try looking up tutorials on youtube.

You mean having them layered and playing at the same time? that all depends on the bass sound you have, if it's something heavily filtered and compressed it won't really be noticeable if you play them at the same time. But why would you want to do this? I mean I guess you could if you really wanted to, try it out for yourself and see how it comes out but i've never done anything like that before. To tell you the truth, I don't think it will come out very nice, bass is suppose to be meant for a subtle tone and low end, you should try to keep from moving up and down the octave's so much. When it comes to bass, a slight change up goes a long way, you really don't need to drag it out an octave higher with a seperate bassline

Bass can be tricky to work with, don't be afraid to sample basslines, chop them up, and edit them. Add a lot of EQ and compression, filtering, etc.
Most of the bass I use is sampled, but I do occasionally create my own basslines from scratch using Logic and Reason rewired. Be sure to add Low Pass 12db or 24db filters to really help bring out the low end and bounciness of the bass. hope this helps you out a little more, keep digging for dope bass sounds or riffs.
