Maybe it's a West Coast thing because I can really realate to what most the West Coast rappers are talking about. A whole bunch of realness coming from the heart. I feel that in the Stones Throw rappers. All that Def Jux type shit sounds like too much blah blah. I can't really speak on Big Brother because I'm usually asleep by the time the albums over. Maybe I'll have to take a nother puff and give it another spin. I guess I'll check that "what are you listening" post but remember, the west coast is the left coast.

I'm definitely with you on this. I think its because Stones Throw isn't trying to be underground. This type of thinking saves us from a lot of misused big words that don't add to an mcs sound. I like individuals from the other camps but Stonesthrow is definitely the most consistent. Also, the avant garde stuff Stonesthrow seems to be a lot more educated than the other labels.

I really really dislike Def Jux and their whole attitude. A bunch of pompous idiots if you ask me.

to be honest i'm not really feeling anything right now. in hip-hop that is. i'm not excited about it like i used to be. stones throw is really the only label i keep an eye on nowadays. what you guys really should do though is check out my people here in sweden. we're taking that whole electronic funk and soul into new places. i probably listen to that stuff more than stones throw or any other hip-hop or soul. i know everybody's saying this, but believe me, we're taking it over.

Honestly I think the west is bringing back hip hop the way it used to be..well not all the west but there are a few emerging label/artists etc comming up like stonesthrow, Strong Arm Steady , Planet Asia,Dilated Peoples, Visionaries, etc....They bringing back hip hop like how it used to be back in the east coast, fun, inventive, experimenting and trying to give hip hop its proper artform dues, fuck the rapperthat sings or uses old nursurey rhymes in beats even the lyrical content..

Much respect to the West, but the East has been keeping me happy as well:

Ghostface
Bronze Nazareth
Jedi Mind Tricks
Necro
Masta Ace
Edo. G & Pete Rock
Krs One
RA the Rugged Man
Little Brother
Strange Fruit Project
Jean Grae
C Rayz Walz
Poison Pen

and there's no need to pick names outta this list and put them down, this is who I been feeling.

I like some Def Jux

I agree they try too hard a lot of the time and they come off a little snobby even. But I'd lying if I said Murs and Lif aren't among my favorites, and I also really like Aesop and RJD2.

i like some stuff on sound in color, theyre from somewhere in so-cal. theres some tight stuff on jazzy sport outta japan. that btsradio.net shit someone hipped me to here has really brought a lot of sweet shit to my attention. check it out: www.btsradio.net
they do play some technoish house stuff which i dont realy feel sometimes, but like 80% of the shit they rock is next level hip hop or old school jazz n soul breaks. top notch guest djs and producers. flying lotus has some real nice mixes posted up in the archive.

sorry for that but i really hate how people think that their musical taste is the one and only... especially when the audience at a stones throw show and the audience at a def jux show have so many similarities...
even the marketing of both labels is full of similarities...

I'm not talking about fans. Who gives a shit. Their music just hasn't done it for me.

Ghostface - of course
Bronze Nazareth - don't know
Jedi Mind Tricks - eh
Necro - sick fuck but great at what he does
Masta Ace - fell off after slauterhouse
Edo. G & Pete Rock - eh
Krs One - he still puts out relavent stuff?
RA the Rugged Man - no
Little Brother - pending
Strange Fruit Project - don't know
Jean Grae - hit a miss. hits are good hits
C Rayz Walz - ok
Poison Pen - don't know

The problem with most these people is they seem to whine too much. Trying to preach to me, fuck that.

True, I agree. And, I like both labels. Nothing but respect for both labels, regardless of the albums they put out.

People need to recognize that PBW and El-P have balls man...tires. I mean, we all sit and whine and gripe and discuss, we didn't create functional labels that go against the grain so hard that it etches it's own little grain in the process.....

Whine too much? I know their material pretty well and would never call it "whining." But I can tell you obviously have opinionated preferences so why the fuck are you asking us for advice? Go with what you like, that's about it.

It's not "balls" per se that's one of the perks of running your own damn label. You can do what the fuck you want.

We're not focusing on that, we're focusing on the music that they're putting out and alot of people just not feeling it.

Its nothing else to talk about. You like it or you don't.

Why is Stones Throw the Only Good Underground Label??

It's a matter of taste, bro. I'm not going to be able to tell you why you feel that way, there ain't a right or wrong answer.

It's the only good underground label because they churn out the type of stuff you like and the other labels don't, I guess.

Well, it is kinda balls because his income is coming from his label, so for El-p to put out music that he believes in but isn't going to make money, I think that takes balls. Willing to lose money to put out what he believes in.

PBW is doing the same thing, when people think stones throw, they think madvillain, quasimoto, and now Dilla. This Georgia Ann and Aloe Blac, not exactly the same formula as the previous, but Stones Throw puts out artists that they believe in. I can't point out numbers, but i'm sure Georgia and Aloe didn't sell records like Quas and Madvillain.

Either way, both labels have a very large fanbase, and are putting out music that is pleasing that fanbase. These are really two tough labels to compare.
