Best of 2013?

37 posts in this topic

Anyone have a best of list? I enjoy reading music year end lists. For me its a way to find new stuff. Me personally I have been buying a lot of vinyl this year. Between Rappcats and Stones throw and all my local spots I have spent too much. The Rock Konducta is #1 for me. I managed to get a limited edition of Run the Jewels with the instros and that is #2 for me. Queens of the Stone Age had a new one and I picked up the limted edition dual 12inch 45s. I saw Aesop Rock at the begining of the year. Thats a big deal because no one comes to Humboldt County. And besides that just all the Madlib/Dilla/Doom family tree wax I've managed to buy. Curious to see others lists.

Rock Konducta is up there... I just got hip to Adavnced Jazz, so that has been my number 1 for 2013 even though it is older. Plus it kicked my cravings for old jazz back in gear, so I have been buying lots of vinyl. Really digging Nat Adderley, George Duke and Gabor Szabo (his Nancy Sintra cover is tops).

Right on. Because my Dilla collection record was Gerry Mulligan I have been getting into his stuff.

I have yet to hear Rock Konducta, but as far as ST releases go Rap Album One and Vex Ruffin's LP were high on my best of 2013

Boardwalk and Krista were hands down the best ST projects for '13. 7 Days gets a shout out for making the impossible a reality. Oh No's 'Disrupted Ads' definitely made my top 5 as well as 'The Burgundy' from MED, Blu, and The Madlib. Durag Dynasty gets an honorable mention too. The best album of the year has got to be Rock Konducta Vol. 1 though.

Edit: The instrumental release of Frank N Dank's '48 Hours' was pretty sweet too.

also, Goldfrapp was dope; Juana Molina; Aloa Input, and i've also been listening to a lot of early '80s funk and Italo-Disco music...so big-ups to Gary Low and his 30 year old albums.

Digging this, Jeremiah Jae is probably my favorite artist of 2013. As far as everything else, I have hard time keeping up with current music but I have been listening to a lot of Blood Orange. I have also been digging the Vex Ruffin and Krista stuff.

Kinda underwhelmed by that comp to be honest, nothing very new and the new mastering kills the grimey aesthetic of the original tracks imo. Still good for people who might not have heard these tracks before though.

Yeah, true that. It's a nice listen but it's not like it blew me away. I had most of the tracks already however I did like the OG Sparkdala and Catchin The Vibe. Those two were standout tracks to me for 2013 but it was more of an old compilation than a dope new album to me.

Ah yeah I can see that now. I'm not too up on his massive amount of material so it was almost like a new album to me.

Damn. I guess I was too high everytime I played that album I totally forgot it even dropped. Yessir definitely makes my list. I'm not an 'unreleased mp3' Internet Hound so most of the comp was new to me especially since I don't have most of the early 12". 'Brothers Can't See Me' was my joint of that LP!!!

Bought two 2013 releases: Twelve Reasons to Die, which was extremely dissapointing, and the mentioned Yessir Whatever.

I really liked it, the remastering was top quality and pretty much made the album for me. (I think I listened Born Like This before Yessir *shivers*). i'm keeping Quas on the cover btw, haha.

.........but I do wonder why the album, or EP, was kept at 30min lenght. Might as well go all out on a 'Quasimoto Retrospective' when many don't own and haven't heard the 12's, like already said...right?

Mathematics remix, Come on feet remix, BS, 'the beats, the beats, the beats', Don't trip, Spaces...Loopdigga, original Raw Addict...and I think there's two or three instrumentals. And all that is only the previously released stuff.

But of course it's easier said than done, I guess.

i'm surprised none of us have mentioned that little Porter Chops Glasper project from back in like April...

that shit was crazy good, i never thought i'd say this but i wanna hear a full-length project from the artist formerly known as Kon Artis in 2014. he's stepped his game up and pretty much re-invented his persona as one of these dope underground producer/mc's, glad to see transformations like that happen in the post-Dilla era.

I have the 10 inch single of that which was put out for record store day. I'm tempted to keep it sealed and see what happens in a couple of years.

Best-of lists are so narcissistic and fun.

1. Major Lazer "Free The Universe"

2. Pusha T "MNIMN"

3. Danny Brown "Old"

4. Black Milk "No Poison No Paradise"

5. Run The Jewels "S/T"

6. Quelle Chris "Ghost At The Finish Line"

7. Daft Punk "Random Access Memories"

8. Katy Perry "Prism"

9. Charli XCX "True Romance"

10.Alunageorge "Body Music"

And tons of other great shit, Juicy J, Action Bronson, Eddie B, Roc Marciano, Czarface, on and on. Great year of releases as far as I'm concerned.

As for specific tracks, these were some of my absolute favorites:

Bunji Garlin "Differentology (Major Lazer Remix)"

Yellow Claw "P*30852YRICH (Featuring Adje)"

Raekwon "All About You" AND "Soundboy Kill It"

Black Milk "Poison"

Daft Punk "Doin' It Right"

DJ Quality "Pa Mi Crew (Crew Love Remix)"

Just read an article that there were no black artists with number one singles this year...I'm always one for thinking beyond the surface of things.

http://soundcheck.wnyc.org/story/black-artists-top-singles-chart-2013/

Does it matter? Are the billboard charts relevant anymore?

Billboard hasn't been relevant to me for 14 years now, but it stills matters to the 'industry' folk I guess.

With regards to black artists not reaching a number one single this past year I think a lot if this has to do with how people are going about listening to their musi. I remember reading a piece by noz from cocaineblunts saying that statistically young black and Hispanic listeners are more likely to use their mobile devices to stream music for free from places like YouTube whereas whites are typically the ones who will purchase something from iTunes or a physical product. So the numbers are kind of deceptive because essentially urban artists might be getting just as much playing time and exposure but its in a different environment where metrics like SoundScan can't measure it as well.
