Banksy NYC

92 posts in this topic

yeah he also paid/set up a random crusty guy as a street vendor hawking actual banksy prints on the Lower East Side, right next to the bullshit tourist-art vendors on the street. Selling them for like 60 bucks. They could resell for at least five figures. Fucking insane. not pleased I was not down there that day. I think it was in response to the guys charging fat stacks for a glimpse at a spray-painted beaver.

Yeah, that was the first thing that he did that I respected. His art is crap. He himself has to know it.

I cant believe that crap would sell for so much. Just to have some terrible stencil.

How artful to post a Simpsons cartoon. Like I do not know how your mind works. Of course you are a purveyor of art too, I should recall that. Freckles are pretty, buddy.

You seem to be the historian.

Your attempt at humor is how do we say...predictable. I think we both know that.

Shit MWBOOGIE ain't down with the Banksy. If you truly think his work sucks, then I truly scratch my head at what you might like.

So what is good about this piece, young man? I'd love to hear it.

Art is subjective...I like Banksy, but I got the most fucked up feeling Mr. Brainwash is going to make his NY invasion a much crazier and bigger event when that time comes.

You realise Me Brainwash is terrible right? He is a bit of a joke. He just kind of has gotten lucky. Anyhow, yes, art is very subjective, that's why Back Street Boys did so well.

Banksy aka Mr. Brainwash is basically playing a magician's game. He does a documentary on himself doing a documentary on his competition while actually doing a documentary on himself. Banksy is Mr. Brainwash. He got next to all these cats learned how they did their shit and used that to do his own shit via proxy.

Magicians use misdirection all the time. They get you thinking you're focused on what they are doing, but they are actually doing something else and then when they pull the trick you're focused on, you're amazed. Mr. Brainwash is Banksy who is Mr. Brainwash who is Banksy...

A bored rich funny looking French guy got the entire world fucked up in the head and caking off it too.

I full heartedly disagree. Mr Brainwash's work is terrible. They are no where near each other in terms of talent. I see and here Banksy speak in the film, how he thinks, and the same Thiery (Mr Brainwash). Mr Brainwash is the French guy. There was no slide of hand by Banksy. Why would he openly insult the quality of Mr Brainwash's work??! This is a silly idea.

Banksy really pisses me of. My art teachers call him "street art" and say its not really vandalism if its by banksy. Banksy is definetly not the best stencil artist and not the first. He is fairly wack to be honest. Now graff culture has been flooded with 1000s of banksy clones and fan boys. Real graffiti looks like this

i think a lot of dudes on this thread are misinterpreting the foundations of graffiti thinking that it can only be rough-hewn bubble letters sprayed by black/hispanic dudes calling out their crews or gangs...smh at your guys' ignorance, if you read up on your history you'd be well aware of dudes like Basquiat, Richard Hambleton, Blek le Rat, and most notably Keith Haring-- a white, homosexual man who garnered the respect of the entire hip-hop & fine-art worlds simultaneously. foh with your "only i know what art is" BS, the whole point of art, especially in the postmodern, is subjectivity. you don't have to like it, but saying it isn't art makes you just sound like an elitist douche.

There's nothing special about Banksy, if you ask me. And I'm not misinterpreting it, it's just that there are other, more talented street artists than him, in my opinion. And yes, I've heard of the aforementioned artists and no, they didn't make up the foundations of the graffiti movement but yes, they've participated in spreading it and developing what we call 'street art', and that happened when graffiti started to expand from where it firstly started (the streets) to the galleries, which basically involved all the bigger names on the scene, real bombers being the only exception.

As style was the most important part of being a graffiti artist, it was bound to blow at some point, since there was a rather impressive number of people involved with it, each of them having (or at least trying to develop) their own particular style.

So I wouldn't call misinterpreting it, it's just liking a different form of graffiti better, which in this case happens to be one of the earliest ones (after tagging) on which the rest of the movement was founded. It's always been about sending trying to get your name/message across, and all of the mentioned artists succeeded in doing so, can't argue about that.

Banksy's problem is he makes it look too easy, therefore haters think what he does is simple. I find a lot of his work inspiring. Sure, it is not as time intensive as a big piece done by hand, but some of his images are stunning the first time you see them. I really like this one: http://www.banksy-wallpaper.com/wallpapers/1680x1050/07-flower-thrower-wallpaper.jpg
