      Sorry for the outage. The board went down for repairs on January 5th, and we didn't expect to be out for a full 16 days.  STMB is using a default skin, as you can see, and that will probably be the case for a few weeks.  Meanwhile, the board is working better than it ever has before.

Kick Compression?

i need help, guys.

my mind's totally drawing a blank right now-- what's that technique called when you get the kicks to compress in a way that causes the volume to turn down automatically in a beat? i've done it before, but i forgot exactly what i did...and i forgot the name of it so i can't find the tutorials for it anywhere on YouTube lol.

all i know is that a lot of us use it...and it makes for a cool effect. and i'm experimenting with mixing right now but i forgot the damn name of it so i'm just stuck.

EDIT: nevermind, i figured it out...sidechain is what i was referring to. of course it popped in my head right as i posted this...any mods wanna delete this thread for me???

possibly....either way, i'm sure ducking would be a good thing to know. isn't that just fixing the faders to mute out shit, like rhythmically?

Ha ha yeah it can't be done, wait for 2.0 they have finally given it to us in the update, only way I do it is export all the tracks out of maschine into another program, then set the sidechain up in that, but hopefully I won't have to do that anymore. There's so many styles, Pumping, ducking, gated, ducking is when the audio cuts when someone speaks, like on radio. Pumping compression is what Madlib does a lot of but people think it's sidechain. Then there is envelope filtering, more about pushing the frequency than cutting it out.

you have to pay for the update, looks worth it to me though, loads of new stuff, a new audio engine, and multicore.

ahh was playing with side chaining last week getting the hihat to duck a synth but i couldn't get a exxagertaed sound.

i use reaComp for it.

anyone got any ideas that would help achieve a really sucky sound?

@Tacitus use the hats that you have laid and just stack a kick on top of it. EQ it to a point where you only hear that initial "thump" and adjust the attack to your likings.

okay, so after a lot of experimenting on my DAW with these techniques i'm still not getting it to do what i want.

maybe i should have been a little more specific...here is an example of what i was referring to, probably incorrectly even though i know it involves compression in some sort of way:

can anyone on here tell me what he's doing to get this sound where the sample ducks every time the kicks play?

That's sidechain alright, try this

Gain: -4.28 db

Dry/wet: 100%

Ratio: 100%

Attack: 0.51

Release: 21.1

It sounds like this guy sent a couple of tracks to a bus with sidechain compression set up, what I have noticed is harder sounds duck out better, you can hear they have ducked clearer. also play with the attack and release, and it's not just compression you can sidechain, now go play my young Padowan!!

yeah, i still need some help with this whole compression idea lol.

i guess i never really learned the concept of bussing or a lot of this mixing jargon, cause as of right now my experiments have all gone horrendously...

so to recap: am i trying to route both my kick track and my sample track to the same "bus send" where i cue up a compressor?

i feel like i'm missing a whole bunch of steps in between, cause all that's doing is turning down my mix haha.

i've also tried the "link to controller" option to link my sample track's fader to my kicks, but that seems to do too much sidechaining where the fader automatically mutes the sample entirely, then shoots up really quick for each kick before muting again...

(also, i'm on FL Studio 9 fyi)

alright. compress your sample/bassline/melody-and-shit/whole mix. keep your kick seperate from that and feed it into the sidechain on said compressor.

you seen this one, should help, if you want the sample sidechained, send that to the bus which you put a compressor on, then tell the kick to be the input sound for the sidechain compressor that you have sent your sample to, you don't send the kick, to the same bus as the sample.

You should sidechain your bassline as well (if it's separated from the sample), like this:

(Basically the same thing as in the video ODK posted, but a little more in-depth). Then you can apply the same procedure to the sample(s).

Was trying to keep it simple as he's having a nightmare getting it going ha ha!! I dare not mention sidechaining in S & M, on the whole track !!

One important thing I forgot to note: if you're gonna apply any other effect besides the limiter or the parametric eq (like delay, flanger etc...) from the mixer to the sample - you're gonna have a bad time since they will also apply to the channel (in this case the kick) to which the sample channel is sidechained. You'll then have to create a ghost kick, link it to another channel and then sidechain the sample/bassline to the ghost kick channel.

You side chain the sample to it's own bus (Bus is basically another track with nothing on it, for those that are thinking what is a bus) you avoid all that ghost kick drama, and you can still effect each track without that problem of sidechain ruling over everything you can do, I'm going to have to learn this all again Friday when Maschine 2.0 comes out, now they have let us sidechain. If I have to do the ghost note shit in there then, Ill carry on using samplitude.

i can take it from here, i'm starting to get that effect i was looking for...

yeah, i guess i really was doing it a stupid way lol. that makes sense though-- sidechain the kicks to the sample/bass and then use the limiter as a compressor, i would've never thought of doing that haha but it seems so simple.

on another note, i haven't tried sidechaining the sample to its own bus just yet...nor do i really understand what a ghost kick is. i can look it up, but yeah...i'm not sure if i don't want those or if that's exactly what i'm after.

Less than 24 hours, we're probably have to learn it all over again, looks completely different, and now with a mixer there has to be new button combos to learn.

okay, i got some new issues i'm trying to figure out with my mixing that have arisen since i started attempting to sidechain stuff.

whenever i sidechain my sample to the kicks, it seems to then play the kicks out of both channels, meaning that my kicks are now being doubled up and it's causing a phasing effect i don't want.

also, i tried sending both kicks i'm using to a bus, but the bus itself doesn't really seem to do much. i can add effects and stuff to it, but again it's just mimicking the other channels i assigned to it and doubling up instruments on me. i wanted to just mix down my two kicks to one send channel to then sidechain that singular channel to the sample, but it won't allow me to do that. anybody got any ideas? (again, i'm using FL Studio 9)
