      STMB   01/22/2017

Sorry for the outage. The board went down for repairs on January 5th, and we didn't expect to be out for a full 16 days.  STMB is using a default skin, as you can see, and that will probably be the case for a few weeks.  Meanwhile, the board is working better than it ever has before.

Bootleg Vinyl in stores?

22 posts in this topic

Recently I've noticed a lot of what appears to be bootlegged "limited edition" vinyl popping up in the Amoeba record store near me. Not like, buried in the racks, but even put on the display shelves. Anyone know what's up with this? So far I've seen Section80, Reflection Eternal, Black On Both Sides, 1999, Yeezus, Black Star and a couple others I can't remember. They all have a similar aesthetic with kind of "faded," unofficial looking versions of the artwork (like a shitty copy job), GIANT parental advisory posts and a the same "LIMITED EDITION" typed on them. For a split second I was stoked to see Black Star on vinyl but immediately realized something was off about it. I don't know. Seems odd.

Thoughts?

Every 2 weeks I like to browse hhv.des pre order section and when I saw those re-issues and what not, I was very skeptical. That "UK Label" also released Frank oceans Channel Orange, Commons Dreamer, Believer and other albums. There releases are fairly cheap, but I never bought one. I dont expect a good sound at all.

Yeah. Definitely not legit stuff. Surprised a store like Amoeba would even sell it.

Damn... straight bootleg joints. Around 2000 the big bootleg bullshit in all the record spots were "Made in England" or "Import" stickered LPs and 12"s. Same shit.

The Dreamer, Believer part is weird since it has an official vinyl release.

You can purchase my copy if you like. I think it was played quite a bit.

Amoeba was nice. The dig experience there is so different. I could not get out of the jazz section.

Does anyone still purchase records?

Just trying to do an age check on here. I just figured everyone else on here downloaded shit.

everyone should realize that these bootlegs are made from CD or MP3 masters.

any "less" wack? You miss my point: using retail CD and MP3 sources for vinyl makes a Bad Record, period.

Especially MP3. I've heard some bootlegs (a couple of Dilla) that definitely used low MP3 sources.

Sorry. The way you phrased it it sounded like you were somehow defending it.

Interesting. I've also seen promo mixtapes/ street albums (whatever you want to call them) at retail stores like FYE and Best Buy. Some people are so out of tune with things that they pay for these projects, which are readily available online for free as initially intended. I wonder how they get away with this practice though. When you consider that mixtapes are largely remix-based and/ or contain unlicensed beats, how do retail stores get away with putting a bar code on these?

Still buy records/cassettes/CDs/VHS. I accept that Betamax and Laserdisc are now obsolete formats. If a hard drive dies, or "they" switch off the interwebz, I still got all my shit.

I still have MiniDiscs laying around home (yeah we own the MD player too), anyone got them as well??

I have got a vinyls all over our place (well my dad does, since he was a DJ), but unfortunately there are no such record stores here that sell vinyl really anymore. I'd love to do some digging, would feel way more 'natural' than ordering them from off the internet but eh, sometimes you're not left with much of a choice.

Luckily the people over here haven't thought of bootlegging them...
