      Sorry for the outage. The board went down for repairs on January 5th, and we didn't expect to be out for a full 16 days.  STMB is using a default skin, as you can see, and that will probably be the case for a few weeks.  Meanwhile, the board is working better than it ever has before.

were can I get those really fat snares used in boom bap ??

cant seem to get it, mine sound to snappy

any production techniques, sound packs, genres to sample breaks from etc.. ?

Croup Drums, hands down, Goldbaby as well. you won't need anything else, or record snare hit's from any metal made in the 90's, muck about with eq, find the knock, the ring, the punch.

Ooops Perfect already let the cat out the bag ha ha!!! :lol:

So im into making drum sounds within soft synths and i have the same problem in making them hit hard the same way. Would that multiband compression work well in getting that crunch on those too or is it that i rely more on my synthesis to make that happen?

What sort of crunch ?, if you bit crush the drums, then eq, then use compression to bring the signal up and hit at the same intensity, like a limiter. Then get a frequency response see where your drums are hitting, then go through every other track and eq the frequency where the drums are hitting (Get rid of it), also trying using eq to get rid of things instead of boosting, you got to make room the sounds can't share the same space.

im in need of a way to make them seem more present as well as feel like they're coming from a broken synth drum machine type feel. and all the tools you presented help in both fashions.

the broken synth drum machine sounds i could get more assistance with thou.

That was very insightful OD, I use about the same strategy as yours, except i don't cut the same frequenties, i'm gonna try that.

What do you do in regard to the kick and the snare, u Eq them on the same frequency and sidechain?

No what I do is, layer my drums and send all the kicks to one bus and all the snares to their own bus, say 3 kicks, 3 snares, if I'm going to sidechain, I use the thumpy kick and then send that to it's own one, rather than the mid range knocker kicks, and then just send the other 2 kicks, actually check this you can hear the drums come in harder. but it's usually the PSP Vintage thing that goes on each bus.

My kicks and snares I very rarely eq, I tend to boost certain things that they already have, I also tend to eq the whole track and stick a bus compressor on, just so the whole thrack is glued before I even start.

Thanks for the tips in this topic. When some snares sound dull I try putting a pedal hi-hat underneath them, it really makes them sound better sometimes.

it should've been in regard to the kick and" the bass" that's why i said same frequency. Sorry bout that.

Very interesting to read. I fix my drums 9/10at the last phase of the song. I Usually start out EQ-ing kick/ snare and cims. i don't bus em together. I make sure the kicks hit where it needs to , the snare and the hats as well.

Then i usually compress the snare, put reverb chamber on it and sidechain the echo or ghost sound with the kicks.

Then i compress my hihats a bit and sidechain em on kick or snare or both.

Then i might add some bitcrush to the kick (very minimal).

Usually i'll add some extra snare/clap or crunchy sound at about the same place as the snare. When all that is done and it still feels like it's missing out i start added splashes rides and toms (need to do more toms i know)

When th drums are done, I sidechaing the bass or melody on the kick (and sometimes on the kick and the snare for really dynamic effect of the bass.

Then when the song is totally finished i master it as a whole and the drums usually sound glued to the track.

That's basically how i do my drums.

If u guys got any suggestions, i' d be more then happy to try a few out.

I was used to laying too much drums at the beginning but now I started to understand that it's easier doing it step by step, so lately I've ended up doing it in a manner similar to yours. I have never really played with toms now that you mention it, don't know if it's so because most of the preset ones suck or because I never really laid a break good enough to incorporate them hmm... Nothing beats sampled breaks though, for real. Especially those sweet, buried, unused ones (I thought those were extremely rare or completely nonexistent but then I dug deeper).

Oh yeah forgot to say as well I use a lot of heavy metal tactics, I used to talk to all the drummers at gigs years ago and try and pick their brains, Vinnie Paul, the drummer from Pantera would mic his kit up himself, in the studio and live, I have never heard anything so well toned, He told me when he mix's something that he wants heavy, he just plays the kick in the mix loud, then raises the bass until they meet, but you can really distinguish, between the kick and bass, then he brings everything else up in volume, think this is why I get a lot of dam your drums are heavy comments, I've always applied this. If I'm going to use a break I have to layer and play my own drums over, I've never been comfortable with loops, and feel like I haven't done anything myself.

I know Metallica's a classic example but if you ask me Lars Ulrich always had the DOPEST snares (especially on the Black Album), word:

Shit I could go on posting drums being raped here until tomorrow but it wouldn't be appropriate.

Pantera always had heavy ass drums and riffs yeah, true that. I have always thought about sampling some metal breaks but the problem is there are always way too much toms/cymbals involved so it wouldn't really fit as a hip-hop drum break. I haven't listened to metal in quite a while though, I might go and dig some of the stuff I have to see if there are any isolated and sample-worthy breaks, thanks for reminding me.

Bob Rock production, I remember that so well, that was the start of the end for Metallica, it would be if you used Bon Jovi's producer, you remember Helmets I know, check the break at the beggining.

+1 on the Decimort and id like to add spl transient designer to get more (or less) attack n sustain.

gold baby's dirt n layers to ad that vinyl touch n sound. layer then eq. compress if needed.
