      STMB   01/22/2017

Sorry for the outage. The board went down for repairs on January 5th, and we didn't expect to be out for a full 16 days.  STMB is using a default skin, as you can see, and that will probably be the case for a few weeks.  Meanwhile, the board is working better than it ever has before.

THE J DILLA RECORD COLLECTION SALE

151 posts in this topic

So I got the record today. It's the Gerry Mulligan songbook. Haven't looked into it yet. But I'm stoked.

Hi STMB, not posted here for a while, but I need to tell you this, because my real life social partners do not understand my excitment :-P

Ok, so I ordered a LP from Dillas collection. Wont tell right now what it is, but after I managed to listen to it. I found that it contains a sample that he actually used and it seems that the source was not yet revealed in public. Only found sample Id questions on that beat.

:O I most propably own a Record that he himself sampled from. I am not a Hardcore Dilla nerd, just enjoying most of his creations...but that thrills me.

The Beat is Timeless from Illa J's Yancey Boys LP. Any guess on the Sample?

Cheers

Just

Not yet named. But yeah, it is a pianist. :-P The LP is just Piano.

The cover somehow was familair to me, but I found that it is very similiar to a classic hiphop LP cover...

Shazam has the song, might help you if you'd play around with the sample-only intro of timeless.

Wonder if House Shoe knows. He might want to trade the Information for some test presses or something. he needs those sample sources for the James Version Mixes. ;-)

No.

Madlib did not mention him (hint, a male pianist ;-)) in Jazzcats to rule out some.

New to the board... so pardon me.

I wasn't sure if the record sale was still going, but confirmation arrived today, as I received this:

the_moody_blues-a_question_of_balance_19

Seems he sampled Moody Blues frequently, but I haven't found if he's used this one at all. Anyone?

great record!

Yeah, I'm pretty pumped. I'm not crazy familiar w/ them, other than my Dad loved them. I'm listening on Youtube right now, and it's pretty great, indeed.

There is also a smudgy fingerprint on the inside cover. The fact that it looks like whoever was leafing through it was eating a brownie or something (perhaps a donut?), I can only hope...

Anyone on here know how to ID fingerprints? Lol.

maybe we could all collectively swipe our Dilla records for prints, hairs and other things of that nature and create ourselves a clone, Weird Science style...i remember last year that guy bought John Lennon's tooth with the same intentions, let's link up with that guy and start the greatest duo of all time with clone John Lennon on the vocals and clone James Yancey on the beats.

who's with me?!?!?!

I'm down. I think I know somebody who claims to have a jar full of J Dilla toenail clippings we could possibly use.

I wonder what J Dilla would think of this thread if we took it back in time and showed him.

I just got this in the mail today from the Dilla sale:

R-2049895-1260875987.jpeg.jpg

I've been very interested in Toots since I got a Dizzy record from the 80s with him on it, so even though you can pick this one up for $5 elesewhere, I'm pretty stoked this one came from the collection and it's mint except for the "Car City records" sticker on it, which makes it even better...
