Funny, I went from the HD 280s to the ATH M50s. Sound was pretty good on the 280s but they were incredibly uncomfortable imo. I like the audio and the comfort of the ATH M50s.

I use hd 280 for producing, not listening.

I don't see how this is a rebuttal to anything he said, isn't a part of production listening? I would still like to know why you feel they are so overrated.

Overated doesnt meen bad...

The HD280 have a flat response. No colour. AthM50 is for listening. I personally think the AthM50 is an overated pair of headphones

http://www.head-fi.o...-m50s-overrated

'The M50s have horribly recessed mids and thin, fatiguing highs. They have some pretty deep bass, but not much "slam" due to the lack of mids. The EQ is so V-shaped it would be impossible to use them for any pro mixing or recording application, supposedly what they're made for. They give you almost no idea how something will sound over normal monitors with flat frequency response'

MY OPINION

Cool, I just wanted to know why you felt that way, I hope I didn't come off as real aggressive or anything.

My last pair of M50s was destroyed by my careless use and I'm going to grab another pair and just wanted to hear your criticism of them. I would agree that they aren't for mixing and such, but I've always heard that the rule of thumb was to never mix with headphones. I mainly used them for beat making. I did peep the HD280s but didn't like the way they looked, which is important to me being a very visual person.

In a perfect world I would have a pair of the M50s and the Sony MDR7506.

This is very true from my experience as well, the 280s are def a bit more flat which is probably better for mixing/producing as you've mentioned.

^ I'm defiantly gonna cop a pair of those. Not having a detachable cord was my only gripe with the M50s.

I got a pair of sennheiser something's... Towards the bottom end of their range.

Also got a pair of shitty Sony ones that I sometimes use if I can't be bothered finding the others, not good sound quality but good enough for messing around.

edit - funny I just changed my avatar a couple days ago and actually forgot about it and just realized this is my first post since then lol.

I'm not an audiophile but can easily tell the difference between shitty sounding phones and good ones. I used to have a pair of Sony MDR-V600's and thought they sounded phenomenal but I ended up breaking them. Since then I've tried quite a few IEMs such as Sennheiser CX-300 and Creative EP-630 and liked most of them. I saw someone on a headphone forum recommend this really cheap earphone JVC HAFX8R Riptidz and thought an $8 phone couldn't possibly sound good. But holy shit these things sound as good as the CX-300!! I bought 5 pairs to last me a long time lol.

I recently bought a pair of Panasonic RP-HTF600's and they sound really good to my ears, especially for $35. The bass is pretty fucking incredible and will make your head shake. http://www.amazon.co...e?ie=UTF8&psc=1 - hmmm looks like they almost doubled in price since I bought them. Still think they sound awesome for 60.

I have a friend who has a pair of ATH-M50's and asked him if I can borrow them to try. He hasn't dropped them off yet but I'm pretty excited to hear them.

I just got some ath-m50x's for xmas.... They're not bass heavy enough for me. I know you might say "grifty, you're a mad man"; now; well, that's true.

I'm thinking about selling them and using the money to buy some Sony xb700s. Anybody wanna trade?
