i'm assuming he was just like, "who the fuck is this?" and assumed nobody would ever hear this album and thought he could get away with saying absolutely nothing on a track meant to be about where he grew up.

...

so i think it's kinda disrespectful to both FG and Madlib that he dropped such a whack verse, knowing that his usual output is miles ahead of those whack 8-12 bars he just randomly tried cobbling together for a paycheck....not sure what my opinions of him are anymore.

you're assuming a lot...

it's ok, you can say it. it's a bad verse. the end.

not really...how many artists have you seen take a paycheck for something they didn't really put their best effort into?  i can name dozens off the top of my head.

Iv tried to find a good song from Ab-Soul after hearing him on GTA5 with no luck. Can anyone give me the name of one good song?

Or you may just not like him at all.

wow...you know what, i can't really find one either haha.  i mean, i know he's good...but the only "good" song i've found that i actually dig is that track "Illuminate feat. Kendrick Lamar".  i could've sworn there were more, maybe none of the tracks i'm thinking of were singles.

Control System has most of his good songs, I'm getting off track here though.

Yo JF. I can feel what you're saying and for me a lot of that applies to Earl's verse on 'Robes'. I've kind of avoided anything OF related since they came on the scene and this was actually the first time I'd ever even heard Earl rap. Overall, I wasn't that impressed and I'll likely stay on my narrow minded path for the time being because of it. I know his verse gets a lot of flack but I actually enjoyed M&M's verse more than the OF kids'. Also people need to stop sleeping on the title cut, some of those cats I have never even heard of absolutely annihilated that shit.

yeah that part of your thinking is legit, no debate... however, assuming Ab never heard of Gibbs and further assuming he also assumed (c'mon that's one too many assumptions) that nobody's going to listen to a Gibbs' and Madlib record... that part of your thinking is kind of insane.

People may not agree but the best track on Section 80 was due to Ab Soul

Also pretty great, Control System is an excellent album

not really.  he's more in the mainstream than Gibbs OR Madlib, maybe he's never heard of either...i know we all run in this circle where it's hard to imagine people who don't know who Otis is, but they exist-- and in far greater numbers than any of us combined.  i didn't know who he was until i intentionally sought out his music, and Cali's a HUGEEE scene so i can see it being feasible that Ab's path never crossed with Lib or Gibbs's.

I was wondering earlier today when we would start seeing official remixes of the couple acapellas that are on the 'Shame' 12". Just saw that BBNG remixed it. Well hot damn that's awesome! Thank you rappcats for reading my mind.

i made a remix of "Terrorist" like 2 years ago back when i first got the vinyl...it didn't turn out well, though, so i kinda hid it with all my other failures in life.

UPDATE (5/8/14): thought i'd just add to this instead of posting another reply.  so i was listening to Piñata this morning, and it just me...why, oh why, oh why did we not get a track with Freddie Gibbs featuring Madlib rapping....or better yet, Lord Quas????

then i got sad because i know that's not gonna happen...but just the mere thought of it sounds amazing.  has anyone brought that up yet?  can you imagine a track like "America's Most Blunted" or something, translated into the FG/Pinata universe?!?!?! that shit cray.

not sure if i already spoke my opinion on the track "Lakers"...but yes, that Ab-Soul verse is the worst thing i've ever heard him spit--which is very suspicious, because imo Ab-Soul is like easily in the top 5 of the best rappers out there currently (check out his solo work, i promise he's good haha).

this makes me wonder whether or not he took Gangsta Gibbs seriously when he was hit up for a guest feature; i'm assuming he was just like, "who the fuck is this?" and assumed nobody would ever hear this album and thought he could get away with saying absolutely nothing on a track meant to be about where he grew up.  but lo and behold, several months later this shit is in the running for AOTY for a significant chunk of the underground hip-hop world, and Soulo just completely murked his first impression with some of the most loyal, open-minded fans you can find.

so i think it's kinda disrespectful to both FG and Madlib that he dropped such a whack verse, knowing that his usual output is miles ahead of those whack 8-12 bars he just randomly tried cobbling together for a paycheck....not sure what my opinions of him are anymore.

I like his verse. Also, Gibbs is probably friends with that crew. He had already done joints with Jay Rock, who's arguably bigger than Ab-Soul. I think you're also underestimating the popularity of Freddie Gibbs outside of the Madlib type crowd.

Yeah I think FG definitely has had/getting more mainstream recognition. If it weren't for Madlib's name being on the cover/him being featured on the back I imagine his work/recognition being overlooked/ignored by the crowd who was listening to FG's music before this record. Posted it here or in some other thread, but even when Lambo was giving FG Madlib beats his thought was only to use them as intros/interludes until Lambo convinced him to start rapping over them lol

Damn, it's still $21.00?

FG + M = 21

but also

(FG + M) - FG = 21

however

FG ≠ 0

Surrender to the logic of Rappcats!
