That release through Moodymann's Mahgoni label should be nice. Sounds like one of the unreleased beat tapes.

why do they always have to title the beats? they're never good at it. just leave them untitled.

hah yeah i was thinkin the same thing, titles just look plain silly. although in a way it kinda feels appropriate cause i'm use to the fan made titles for these unreleased tapes. just seems like the first thing that pops into your head while listening, which is usually an eclectic mix of things due to the diverse nature of his music. I always think of the one titled "watching smurfs on shrooms" which i personally think is a pretty accurate depiction.

Man, it bothers me that they retrieve some of Dilla's incomplete tracks, edit/ "complete" them, and then release them as a Dilla product. That's complete bullshit to me. Don't touch this man's music. If the beat is 8 seconds long, release it as an 8 second track - PERIOD. I say this in light of the comment about how they name his tracks...that shit is wack as fuck too. Posthumous releases that aren't unadulterated, like Jay Stay Paid claimed to be, are a true burden and a blessing.

On that note, RIP Jay Dee. I watch Dilla's interviews and documentaries over and over and I still get really emotional. What an amazing phenomenon

To be honest, and as you proably know, I believe that Dilla was in the same business as these folks.

This is sour on the soul.

But how does music get to the people?

I would go ahead and ask... which is the worst of the two evils; leaking Dilla beat tapes years ago under no permission or intent to respect the artist's desires, or releasing Dilla beats posthumously under the respect and desire of the owner(s)/estate's persmission?

You are not the only individual to miss the great King James Yancey, and also have a heavy curiousity about the wonders he would be creating today.

The music is for the people, but what is the price. And until the sun don't shine, there will always be a price.

The consumer is the one to decide.

I think I remember hearing a few years ago that most of the Donuts tracks were short little beats that some of Dawg's friends over at ST just kind of 'extended'. One STMBer made the comment that they never knew Funkaho played such a crucial role in the music of Donuts.

yeah, sometimes it works. but it might have had something to do with the fact that Dilla was still alive at the time.

I can kind of see your point, but the main reason I brought up Donuts is because dude was saying that none of Dil's beats should ever be fucked with, period. He didn't mention a qualifier like 'Well if Dilla approved while he was alive then it's okay in my book.' He took the stance that if one of his beats is only a certain length it should never be touched. If Dil's friends could 'extend' beats in his lifetime why does his passing suddenly change the rules? J Rocc and K Riggs had to 'finish' The Shining because Dilla passed away but now no one ever can try to get some of the unreleased tapes to a very eager public? In an interview with PBW he talked about the fact that Dudley went and 'extended' most of the beats on Expressions but nobody gets in a tizzy that The Madlib's original 29 second beats are turned into full length songs, and yes I know The Madlib is alive so its a little different scenario. My main point though, if its cool to 'edit' and 'extend' beats in someone's lifetime then a precedent is basically set. Dilla might have passed away in 2006 but he left a musical legacy behind and much of it is unreleased tidbits of what could have been, if someone doesn't want to listen to a posthumous release all they have to do is ignore it, like I did with Rebirth of Detroit. Grandstanding on the fact that someone titled an unreleased beat is just one of the many examples Dilla Stans are so easily panned in most of the rap community.

Picked up my copy today! Props to Moodymann for the release.

Glad to have 'Still Laffin' on wax, that's been one of my favorite Dilla beats for a minute.

Do yourself a favor and make sure to pick this up before its too late.
