there's some screetching shit on this i don't like but just on the strength of astral travelling alone this is one of my favourites. that's one song \i'll never sample, just out of respect. I take it he was the first to record this, I know LLSmith was on the album too but did a separate version..?

Brilliant tune. The track was written but Lonnie Liston Smith. He was in Pharoahs band and they recorded it in '70, released in '71 and LLS's 'Astral Traveling' lp was released in '73.

Ayler was a way out dude on a serious free jazz tip, no boundaries but thats what jazz is all bout'
this is a dangerous topic what makes jazz, it seems to me all the visionaries were dissed contemporary and revered in retrospect
thats why they never got no bread.
I cant really recall all my favourite albums but
Eric Dolphy On the Corner
Hank Mobley Soul Station
Miles Bitches Brew
all make the list
But what about Weather Report - Black Market they jazz in my opinion and they way too nice
but really im an amateur and I know from my dabbling that as a genre, this muthfukr is bottomless

Truth right there. There's so many damn gems in this genre that it's almost pointless to add to this thread. It would just end up being a million different recommendations. I'll just point to my screen name and leave it at that. Also, gotta say peace to the Heath Brothers, that shit's heavy.

Mingus is the shit. Highly recommend Black Saint and the Sinner Lady

Also: when Flying Lotus attempts jazz beats/ music, they are usually amazing.
