Georgia Anne Muldrow
+ Straight No Chaser: cover story
"Georgia Anne Muldrow brims with so much optimism
and anxious energy that it barely contains itself. Muldrow composed and
performed all of the music on her debut EP, Worthnothings. The gutsy ingenuity of 'Larva' isn't
a surprise. It's just an enchanting moment from an enormously promising
young talent." "This is a great EP. Georgia is seriously multi-talented and she
has such an evident amount of self-confidence that comes through in her
music. It would have been very easy for Georgia to get pigeon-holed as
an R&B singer by some wack A&R, but enter Stones Throw to give
her the green light she so deserves. This EP is different than anything
I've heard in a while and Georgia made the beats and sang on every track." "Georgia Anne Mudrow's assimilation of classic soul, jazz and hip-hop
is nothing less than innovative, imagine Chaka Khan produced by J-Dilla!" #1. 'LARVA' "Once your ears get accustomed to the wildly
varied elements — soul, jazz, hip-hop, Bjork-like vocal arrangements
— you begin to grasp just how precisely this 22-year-old multi-tasker
has fit everything together. As the first female artist signed to the
Stones Throw label, Muldrow has made one of the most original pieces of
music we've heard all year. "
Georgia Anne Muldrow's debut album "Olesi" was released on Stones Throw Records in 2006. Inspired by solid '70s soul, free jazz and a bottom-heavy hip-hop thump, Georgia paints a unique musical canvas that has the underground stopping to gaze and take it all in. It’s just one 22-year old woman behind such a breadth of sonic expression – she does her own vocals, background vocals AND the beats. Georgia springs from a family of creative musicians, whose roots run deep in the '60s and '70s progressive jazz scene: her father invented instruments for Eddie Harris, and her mother performed with Pharoah Sanders. Their innovation passed to their daughter, who approaches her labyrinth of keyboards, synthesizers and various instruments with a fresh perspective every time. Following her debut album, Georgia began collaborating frequently with Dudley Perkins. + myspace.com/georgiaannemuldrow |
